John TILEY
HUSBAND (2):
[F8862a]. John TILEY.
Of Henlow, Bedfordshire, England. He married on 20 SEP 1596 at Henlow, Bedfordshire, England to Joan HURST [F8863a].
It is not known how John Tilley and Joan Hurst became involved with the Pilgrims, but Henlow was the home of several Mayflower passengers. Besides Joan and John, there were John's brother Edward and his wife Ann Cooper, plus Humility Cooper and Henry Samson. Joan and John left several children behind when they sailed on the Mayflower. Their older children may have been married when the Mayflower sailed, and preferred to remain in England.
Upon arrival in the new world, their first day was a Sunday, so everyone stayed on the ship. On Monday, the 23rd, Bradford recorded that Aour people went on shore to refresh themselves, and our women to wash as they had great need. John was one of the 10 principal men who assisted in the exploration of Cape Cod. Bradford records that the men heard "a hideous and great cry" and fired their muskets to scare what they thought were wolves. In the morning, however, they saw Indians and soon "arrows came flying amongst them." But they continued to explore, and on the 6 DEC trip to Plymouth harbor it was so cold that the freezing spray froze to their clothes until they were "like coats of iron."
John died in Plymouth, Massachusetts in "the sickness" of the first winter. Again Bradford recorded that "John Tilley and his wife both died a little after they came ashore."
WIFE:
[F8863a]. Joan HURST.
Born probably in Henlow, Bedfordshire, England; she was the daughter of William HURST [F17726a] and Rose [F17727a]. She was christened on 13 MAR 1567 in the parish church in Henlow, Bedfordshire, England.
She married (1) Thomas ROGERS on 18 JUN 1593 in Henlow, Bedfordshire, England. They had one child, John ROGERS, who was baptized in Henlow on 26 MAY 1594. Thomas ROGERS died about 1594 or 1595. Joan Hurst married (2) John TILEY [8862A] on 20 SEP 1596 in Henlow, Bedfordshire, England.
She was also a passenger on the Mayflower. It is not known how Joan Hurst and John Tilley became involved with the Pilgrims, but Henlow was the home of several Mayflower passengers.
