A GOODLY HERITAGE



I was born in Globe, Arizona on May 9, 1920, the eldest in a family of three girls and two boys. Though my parents, Clive Vernon Tenney and Minnie Williams, met each other, and fell in love and were married in San Diego, California, just prior to my father's leaving for France during the First World War, they were both born and reared in Arizona. Each came from a home of pioneer faith and were off-spring of several generations of Latter-day Saints who had laid their all upon the altar of sacrifice and service for the establishment of the kingdom of God.

My mother was only two years of age when her father, George Williams [F30], was called on a mission for the Church, leaving his wife, Harriet Thurston, to care for their six children in Thatcher, Arizona. Though I never met grandfather Williams, as he died of Pneumonia at the age of 42 years -- long before my mother's marriage, I felt in a way that I knew him. Mother talked often of her father, his unusual mental endowments and his nobility of character, describing him as a true gentleman of whom it was said: "He was too good for this world." None of his family or friends ever heard him give vent to an oath of anger, even under the most stressful conditions. He was a philosopher and natural mathematician, for through his own studies he taught himself calculus and higher mathematics. I understand that he was a builder by trade who served the Church for many years as a Bishop in the Gila Valley.

She married Glenn Russell HANDY [F6] on 4 NOV 1942 at Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona.
She died 11 AUG 1982 at San Diego, San Diego County, California; and was buried at the city cemetery in Provo, Utah County, Utah.
