Thomas SHANNON and Anne RAND
HUSBAND:
[F474]. Thomas SHANNON. [PC T4].
NOTE: There was another Thomas Shannon who lived in New Hampshire. The two seem to be confused in the records. This is what I believe the records tell us:
Thomas SHANNON [Number 1 - Our Ancestor].
Born possibly about 1725 {S1,S2,S3,S5,S7,S12). Some records say at Rye (S1,S5,S12) and some say at Chester (S8), both in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. The most likely record (S13) says that he came from the Shoals, which are a series of islands off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine. This is probably not where he was born, but was the earliest know location which we have for him.
They lived at Chester. {S11}. One interesting note (S13) is that he is said to have had no permanent residence, probably meaning that he was a renter rather than a property owner.
He married Anne RAND [F475], (a sister of Nathaniel Rand-S13), on 31 MAY 1753 (S1,S2,S5,S11) at (Rye-S1,S5)(Chester-S8), Rockingham County, New Hampshire.
In the summer of 1778 a brigade was sent from New Hampshire to Rhode Island, a part of Col. Peabody's Regiment. Among them was three Shannons (Thomas, William and John), apparently the sons of Thomas and Anne. They entered service on 1 June 1778 and were discharged on 1 January 1779. {S13}.
In the 1790 Census, he is living in Chester with his wife and another female in the household. (S14). Daughter Sarah was apparently married already by this date. Could this other female have been Bettie, for whom we have no marriage record?
He is usually said to have died in Rye (S5,S7), Rockingham County, New Hampshire; but this is probably in error. He probably died in Chester, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.
Thomas SHANNON [Number 2 - NOT our ancestor].
Born about 1720 (S17) at Rye, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. (S12).
He is probably the one who is the son of Nathaniel SHANNON [F948] and Abigail VAUGHAN [F949]..
He married in 1744. (S?).
Thomas Shannon died on 31 May 1752 in Rye, Rockingham, New Hampshire.(S1,S5) Since the children listed below are born after this date, these could not have been his children even though some are said to have been born in Rye. [Was there a third Thomas?].
WIFE:
[F475]. Anne RAND. [PC T4], [CHART A1].
Born (13-S5)(23-S10,S12) AUG 1727 at (Rye-S1,S3,S5,S12)(Chester-S8), Rockingham County, New Hampshire; daughter of Amos RAND [F950] and Ester PHILBRICK [F951.
[Note: It is also said that she was born in Portsmouth (S10). Rye is now within the bounds of Portsmouth, so she should still be listed as having been born in Rye.
She married Thomas SHANNON [F474] on 31 May 1753 (S1,S5) at Rye, Rockingham, New Hampshire.
She died 18 October 1811. (S5).
CHILDREN of Thomas SHANNON [F474] and Anne RAND [F475]:
- Elizabeth (Bettie) SHANNON. Born on 18 September 1753 at Rye, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. (S1,S5). Note that she is not listed in S13.
- William SHANNON. Born on 25 August 1755 in Rye, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. {S1,S5}. He married Hannah HOLMES {S5,S12,S13}, widow of Nathan Lane {S13} in 1781 in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. Nathan died in the army on 26 September 1776. He was in Hezekiah Hutchins’ company, tenth company of the third regiment of New Hampshire in 1775. William appears on rolls of David Gilman’ regiment 10 April 1776. He was on the payroll of Capt. Joseph Dearborn’s company in Col. Moses Nichols’ regiment that marched to Rhode Island, entered 5 August, discharged 28th plus 2 days travel home, in 1777. He died in 1803. {S12}. He died in (1803-S5)(1807-S13). CHILDREN: Dea. Josiah, md. Sarah, dau. of Capt. John Sergent; Sarah, md. Moses Sergent; Jane, md. Jonathan Worthen.
- John SHANNON. Born on 16 August 1757 in Rye, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. {S1,S5,S11}. He married a daughter of Jacob Griffin. {S13}. He appears on rolls of David Gilman’ regiment 10 April 1776. Enlisted in Col. Peabody’s Regiment 1 June 1778. Marched to Rhode Island. Discharged 1 January 1779.
- Thomas SHANNON. Born in 1759 in Rye, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. {S1,S5}. He enlisted in Col. Peabody’s Regiment on 1 June 1778. Marched to Rhode Island. Discharged 1 January 1779. He married (1) Dorothy (Dolly) LOCKE (widow of Josiah Moore, dau. of Capt. William Locke-S13), in 1780, probably in Rye, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. {S1,S5}. He married (2) Sarah PILLSBURY on 20 April 1787 in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. {S1,S12,S15}. He died on 16 April 1846. {S1,S5,S12}.
- Samuel SHANNON. Born in 1762 in Rye, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. {S1,S5}. Enlisted in Col. Peabody’s Regiment 1 June 1778. Marched to Rhode Island. Discharged 1 January 1779. There is some confusion on his marriages. He married (1) Lydia LEAVITT, daughter of Nathaniel Leavitt and Lydia Sanborn, in 1779 in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. {S1,S5}. He married (2) Lydia TABOR in 1788 in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. {S1,S5}. He is said (S13) to have married Lydia (Leavitt) Griffin in 1792. Lydia died (3 oCT 1827-S5)(25 May 1842-S1). He is said to have died in 1813 (S5,S12,S13), but it is possible that the Samuel SHANNON who died in 1813 (or 1814) was from the Pennsylvania SHANNON family, and not the New Hampshire SHANNON family. CHILDREN: Lydia T., b. 1794, md. Josiah Morse; Thomas, md. Davis; Sarah, md. Thomas Chase.
- [F237]. Sarah SHANNON. [PC T4]. Born (about 1765-S?)(in 1765-S5,S12)(1765-1766-S9)(1766-S?) at Chester, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. (S5,S8,S9,S12). She was christened in Exeter, Rockingham County, New Hampshire-(S5). She married Jeremiah LEAVITT [F236] (about 1780)(about 1784-S12)(in 1814)(in 1817-S5) in (Grantham, Sullivan County, New Hampshire-S12)(in Hatley, Stanstead, Quebec, Canada-S5). She died in (1839-1840-S5)(1840-S9) at Twelve Mile Grove (now part of Wilton), Adams County, Illinois. Her daughter-in-law, Sarah Sturtevant Leavitt, reports that she and her husband were not able to join the family at Twelve-Mile Grove until November 1838. When they arrived at Twelve-Mile Grove they found the rest of the family very discouraged because of death and sickness. Mother Sarah Shannon Leavitt had passed away. Genealogy records indicate that her death occurred in 1839/40; however, Sarah Sturtevant Leavitt’s record is probably more reliable and reports her death as occurring before November 1838. In other words, she died between September 1837 and November 1838.
- Morris SHANNON. Born about 1768 in Chester, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. {S1,S12}. He married Susannah CORLISS, but when and where is in question. It was in August 1800 according to {S12}. It was on 3 August 1800 according to {S1,S16}. It was on 22 June 1800 according to {S15}. It was in Rockingham County, New Hampshire according to {S1}. It as in Hampstead, both of Hampstead, according to {S15}. He of Berkshire, Vermont, according to {S16}. He died on 15 August 1831. {S1,S12}. [NOTE: Morris is not listed in S13].
