Richard SALISBURY

HUSBAND:
[F494]. (Robard-S1)(Richard-S2,S3) SALISBURY. (Salisburg, Salesbury).
Born on 14 April 1760 in Gloucester, Providence County, Rhode Island; son of David SALISBURY [F988] and Sarah. (S2,S5).
It is often said that his father was Stephen SALISBURY, but David Salisbury named a son Richard in a deed (" to Richard my son"). No definite link to Stephen has been found. (S5).

Richard Salisbury served in the Revolutionary War in 1776 (fall-40 days, private-Captain May-RI); and again in 1777 (4 months-Capt. May; 5 weeks-Capt. Dexter when Burgoyne was captured; 3 months-Capt. May defending Providence;1 month-Capt. May);1871 [1781?]-enlisted March (9 months-Capt. Dexter's Co, Col JeremiahOlney's RI reg)(Rev War rec 28864). (S2).

He married Prudence [F495] about 1785 in Gloucester, Providence County, Rhode Island.

He moved from Gloucester in about 1800 to Western, Oneida County, New York. He is listed as a head of household in 1800 in Western, Oneida County, New York. His household consisted of 4 males under 10 years, 1 male between 10 and 15 years, 1 male between 26 and 45 years, 1 female under 10 years, 1 female between 10 and 16 years, and 1 female between 26 and 45 years.

He owned property in Western, Oneida County, New York in 1814. {S7}.

In about 1815 he moved to Gavely Point (New York?), where he stayed for 15 years. [5 years?]. {S?}.
There is a Gravely Point Beach in Monmouth, New Jersey area {S8}, but I have not found one yet in New York.
He moved back to Weston, Oneida County, New York. {S?}.

He moved to Connewango area in Cattaraugus County New York by at least about 1824, where he lived for about 9 years. (S2, S6).
The town of Randolph was officially formed from Connewango on 1 February 1826. It was named after Randolph, Vermont. {S6}.

His son David Salisbury married in Randolph, Cattaraugus County, New York in 1824.

The Randolph Methodist Episcopal Church meetings were held in the town as early as 1823, at the houses of Thomas Harvey and others in that locality; but the names of the original members are unknown. The work flourished, and so a legal society was formed on 16 December 1830 for the purpose of building a church. Cornelius Kierstead, Squire Powell, and Richard Salisbury were chosen trustees. {S1}.

Michael SALISBURY owned land in Randolph in 1832. (S6). He is probably a close relative to Richard.

Richard's will is dated 27 MAY 1833. He died on 16 Jul 1833 in Randolph, Cattaragus County, New York. His will was proved on 9 AUG 1834. His will is recorded in New York County Book 5, Volume 1, page 10. (S4). His will and Revolutionary War pension records do not mention his wife, so it is assumed that she died before he did. (S2).

WIFE:
[F495]. Prudence.
Born about 1764, of Providence, Rhode Island. She married Richard SALISBURY [F494] about 1785 in Gloucester, Providence County, Rhode Island. She apparently died before 1832, and so she must have died in Randolph in Cattauraugus County, New York..

CHILDREN of Richard SALISBURY [F494] and Prudence [F495]:
  1. Richard SALISBURY. He was born about 1786. He was living in Napoli, Cattaraugus County, New York at the time of his father's probate record, so he died after 1834.

He was of Western Township, Oneida County, New York at the time of his father's probate record in 1834. He died in 1870 in Stokes, Oneida County, New York. Stokes is in Lee Township. There is also a record of a Stephen Salisbury death record on 16 JAN 1861 in Lyndonville, Orleans County, New York; but this is probably a different Stephen Salisbury.

  10. David SALISBURY. Born about 1800, so he could have been born in Rhode Island before the family moved, or in New York after the family moved. He married (miss) HARVEY, daughter of Thomas HARVEY, in 1824 in Randolph, Cattaraugus County, New York. His marriage is the first mentioned double wedding in the history of Randolph; the other parties being his wife's sister Sabra Harvey to Clement Russell. He was living at the time of the settlement of his father's estate in 1834.
  11. Sally SALISBURY. Born about 1802, probably in New York. She married William WORDEN. She was living in Black River County at the settlement of her father's estate in 1834.

She married Walter MILLER (b. 01/28Aug1802 d. 14Jan1865) in 1823 in New York. They lived first in Chatauqua County, New York. She is named as Polly Miller in her father's Rev. War pension in 1832, and in her father's estate settlement as being of Connewango. They moved to Stephenson County, Illinois about 1854 or 1855. She died on 1 NOV 1879 in Howardsville, Stephenson County, Illinois at the home of her daughter Janet; and was buried on 3 NOV 1879 in the Eleroy Cemetery in Eleroy, Stephenson County, Illinois.
