William MARSTON

HUSBAND:
[F3806]. William MARSTON. (MARSDEN, MASTON).
Born (about 1590-S1S7)(about 1591-S4)(1592-S2,S7) at Ormesby, Norfolk, England; son of Henry MARSTON [F7612]. He is also said to be the son of William (S3), but this seems to be in error. He has also been said to be born in Yorkshire, but this also is very unlikely.

He married (1) Sarah (LOCKE?) [F15141]. They had at least five children born between about 1615 and 1630.

He came to Salem with this family in 1634. He had a grant of land there in 1636, but soon after was in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts for a short time.

William Marston took "ye oath of Allegeance" .(S5).

In October 1638 they moved to Winnecumet in New Hampshire, and were among the original settlers there. It was renamed Hampton, after the English home of some of the settlers.

William had land granted to him in Hampton on 30 Jun 1640.(S9).

John Samborne of Hampton sells to Thomas Marston, "for a valuable consideration, fower acres of fresh marsh, bounded by the salt marsh of John Cram, now in the hands of Roger Shaw; by that of Wm Marston; by the upland of John Samborne, a highway to the north." On 10/4/1648.

He married (2) Sabina [F3807] (about 1660-S11)(about 1662-S18)(1663).

William was a Quaker who suffered from religious persecution both in England and in Hampton, New Hampshire where he later moved. (S5).

Nathan W. Marston said of him:

"He was a kind hearted, benevolent, and godly man, and was a member of the Quaker or Friends, church, and suffered persecutions for his religious tenets. He often harbored and aided his distressed and persecuted brethren, for which Christian deeds he was robbed by exorbitant fines by the zealous and bigoted courts".(S9).

William’s will read;

"the last will & testament of william marston senr of hamton who being through the mercy of god of perfit & sound memory & understanding as followeth I bequeath my Soull to him that gave it & my boddi to the earthe I give to my Eldest Sonn Thomas marston five shillines & to my son william marston five shillinges & to my sonn John marston five shillinges to be paid with [in] twelf month after my deces all the Reast of my estat goodes Chattelles Debtes moveables & what elsed in in any maner of wayes appertaining or belonging unto me I give unto my Dauter Trifana & I dooe make my beloved wife Sabina my Sole Excekketor unto thes my last will & Teastament for the Confirmation hereof I have hereunto sett my hand & seall the 25 of Jauen on thousand six hundred seventy & two

"At a court held at Hampton 8 Oct. 1672, Sabina Marston, executrix of her husband William Marston, Sr., reserved her right of dower. She was given the use of the estate until the child to whom it was willed was eighteen years of age or married with her mother's consent. "

He died on 30 JUN 1672 at Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.

WIFE (1):
[F15141]. Sarah (LOCKE-S17)(Goody-S3) [It is probable that GOODY is a title (Goody Marston) and not her maiden name. But I have not been able to prove that LOCKE is correct either.]
Born in (1595-S?)(1607-S8). She was of Ormesby, Norfolkshire, England. She married William MARSTON [(F3806)] about 1616 in (Yorkshire, England-S7). She died (after 1651)(about 1660-S8) at Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.

WIFE (2):
[F3807]. Sabina. (Sabrina-S8)(Susanna) (PAGE-S3,S8,S18)
Born about (about 1630-S12)(1640-1644) in (England-S12), probably at Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire; daughter of Robert PAGE [F7614] and Lucy WARD [F7615]. (S19). [If she was born around 1640, then she was born at Hampton].

Source 19 says:

“MAY BE POSSIBLE THAT SABRINA PAGE AND SUSANNA PAGE ARE ONE-IN-THE-SAME, BUT DEFINITELY AN UNNAMED DAU. OF ROBERT PAGE, WAS MARRIED TO WILLIAM MARSTON.” (S19). [Note that Susanna married Thomas GLESSON, which leaves Sabina as the one who married William.]

She married William MARSTON [F3806] (about 1660-S11)(about 1662-S18)(1663). Sabina married (2) John REDMAN on 23 JUL 1673 at Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. She died 10 NOV 1689 at Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.(S12).

John REDMAN was born about 1615 and died 16 Feb 1699-1700 at Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.

N.W. Marston (S?) also gives Sabrina's parents as Robert Page and Lucia (Warde) although she hasn't been listed as such in the other sources. If so this would make his second wife the sister of Rebecca Page who married his son William Jr. It is possible that he had this marriage confused with that of William Jr.(S9).

Dow (S?) gives Sabina's name as PAGE and claims that she was the daughter of Deacon Robert and Lucy (WARDE) PAGE.

According to GDMNH (S?), a "traditional" theory is that her surname was HEMINS. The compilers of GDMNH suggest that she was the wife of a Nathaniel LOCKE, a different person from the other Nathaniel LOCKEs herein, and one for whom no contemporary evidence has been found. He (Nathaniel) supposedly died soon after he and his wife arrived in Hampton in 1660. Additional source: Noyes/Libby/Davis, "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire," (1939), pgs. 441 (#3 1/2) and 462 (S11).

The identity of Sabina's surname is not certain according to Noyes/Libby/Davis, "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire," (1939), pgs. 441 (#3 1/2), 462 (#10), and 579 (#1, REDMAN).(S11).

The following document (from S16) shows the Hemin name to be in the Locke family, but is also shows that there is no connection here to Sabina:

David Locke-- Jonathan Locke

Rockingham, S.S.

May 10, 1810.

Then the above named persons Jonathan Locke and David Locke personally appeared and made oath to the above before J. M. Parsons, Justice of Peace.
The above is a true copy of the record attest -- Joseph W. Garland, Town Clerk.

This clearly shows Nathaniel Locke married Judith, and not Sabina.
