Jeremiah LEAVITT and Sarah STURTEVANT

HUSBAND:
[F118]. Jeremiah LEAVITT. [PC T4], [CHART A1].
Born 6 March 1795 at Grantham, Sullivan County, New Hampshire; son of Jeremiah LEAVITT [F236] and Sarah SHANNON [F237]. He married Sarah STURTEVANT [F119] on 6 MAR 1817 at Barton, Orleans County, Vermont. The moved soon afterward to Haltley, Canada where his parents were already living. They also lived for a time in Compton, which is right on the border of Canada and New Hampshire. There they eventually joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This led them to leave Canada in 1835 and go to Kirtland, Ohio to be with the Saints. They moved on to Twelve Mile Grove, Illinois. Upon arrival they found that his mother, who had preceeded them there, had died before their arrival. They moved on to Nauvoo, Illionis, and bought a farm and what was called the Big Mound. There were in Nauvoo during the Martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith. They left Nauvoo with the Saints in the Spring of 1846. In April 1846 the family arrived at Mt. Pisgah, Iowa. He left his family at Mt. Pisgah to go back to the village of Bonepart to obtain provisions, but he became ill and died on 4 August 1846 near Boneparte, Van Buren County, Iowa.

Born on (3-S1)(4-S?)(5-S1) SEP 1798 at Lyme, Grafton County, New Hampshire, daughter of Lemuel STURTEVANT [F238] and Priscilla THOMPSON [F239].

When I was 18 years old the Lord sent me a good husband. We were married at my father's house, March 6, 1817, in the town of Barton, County of Orleans, State of Vermont. The next June we moved to Canada, fifteen miles from the Vermont line, into a very wicked place.

She died on 5 APR 1878 at Gunlock, Washington County, Utah.

CHILDREN of Jeremiah LEAVITT [118] and Sarah STURTEVANT [119]:
  1. Mary Ann LEAVITT. Born in FEB 1818 at Hatley, Stansted, Quebec, Canada. She died in FEB or MAR 1818.
  2. Clarissa LEAVITT. Born in JAN 1819 at Hatley, Stansted, Quebec, Canada. Some say she died young, but others say that she married (1) Horace Sturdevant and (2) Simon Colton.
  3. Louisa LEAVITT. Born 20 January 1820 at Hatley, Stansted, Quebec, Canada. She married William Ellis JONES before 1846. She died 29 MAR 1855.
  4. Jeremiah LEAVITT. Born 20 (10) February 1822 at Hatley, Stansted, Quebec, Canada. He married Eliza HARROVER on 1 February 1845. He was a missionary to the Indians with Jacob Hamblin. He died 12 APR 1878.
  5. Lydia LEAVITT. Born 4 July 1823 at Hartley, Stansted, Quebec, Canada. She married William Snow. She died 9 JAN 1847.
  6. Weare LEAVITT. Born in 1825 at Hatley, Stansted, Quebec, Canada. He married Lydia Savage. He died in AUG 1847.
  7. Lemuel Sturdevant LEAVITT. Born 3 NOV 1827 at Compton, Quebec, Canada. He married (1) Laura Melvina THOMPSON. He married four other times. He died 13 OCT 1916.
  8. Dudley LEAVITT. Born 30 (31) AUG 1830 at Compton (or Hatley), Quebec, Canada. He married (1) 30 AUG 1853 Mary HUNTSMAN. He married four other times. He was a missionary to the Indians with Jacob HAMBLIN. He had a large posterity, having 52 children. He died 15 OCT 1908.
  9. Mary Amelia LEAVITT. Born 10 FEB 1832 at Compton, Quebec, Canada. She married in 1850 William Haynes HAMBLIN in 1850. She died 12 AUG 1893.
  10. Thomas Rowell LEAVITT. Born 30 JUN 1834 at Compton, Quebec, Canada. He married (1st) 1 MAR 1857 Ann Eliza JENKINS. He married (2nd) in 1861 Antoinette DAVENPORT. He married (3rd) (Harriett?) Martha DOWDLE. He was a missionary to the Indians with Jacob HAMBLIN. Thomas was called first to settle in Wellsville in Cache Valley, Utah and then to settle in Canada where a large posterity grew up near Alberta in the Cardston district. More than a thousand of his descendants were counted at a reunion in 1936 at Leavitt, Canada. He died 21 MAY 1890 (1891).
  11. Betsy Jane LEAVITT. Born 12 MAY 1839 at Five Mile Grove, Hancock County, Illinois. She married William Haynes HAMBLIN in 1856.
  12. [F59]. Sarah Priscilla LEAVITT. [PC T4]. Born on 8 MAY 1841 near Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois. She married Jacob Vernon HAMBLIN [F58] on 11 September 1857 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. She died on (23-S1,S3)(24-S2) July 1927 at the home of her daughter Ella in Alpine, Apache County, Arizona. She was buried in Alpine beside her husband on 25 July 1927.
