Roger de LACIE and Maud de CLARE

HUSBAND:
[F243401268]. Roger de LACIE (LACY). Lord of Pontefract.
Born about 1171, of Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England; son of (John Fitzrobert-S?)(John FITZRICHARD de Lacy (Clavering)-S2) [F486802536] and Alice (de MANDEVILLE-S2) (de VERE-S15). He married Maud de CLARE (about 1191)(about 1201-S13) in England. Roger was castellan of Chateau Galliard, located between Paris and Rouen on the Seine at Les Andelys, in Normandy, when Phillip II of France laid siege to it in 1203-1204. Richard I of England built Chateau Galliard specifically to defend western Normandy from the French, and the significance of the siege is that it determined whether England or France would control Normandy. The French were successful, but Roger de Lacy gave such an heroic account of himself that his story just begs to be told.(S15) He died 1 OCT (in 1211-S1,S9)(in 1212-S6) Pontefract, Yorkshire, England; and was buried at Stanslaw Abbey, Cheshire.

WIFE:
[F243401269]. Maud (Mathilde) de CLARE.
Born (about 1175)(about 1184-S7); daughter of Richard de CLARE 6th Earl of Clare (1153-1217) and Amicia Mellent Fitzrobert, Countess of Gloucester (1160-1225). She married (1) William de BRAOS (1200-1210) who was starved to death with his mother by King John in 1210. She married (2) Roger de LACY Baron Halton (1171-1212)

She died in 1213.

[These dates do not fit for a marriage to William de Braos. John de Braos could have been an illegitimate son, or the marriage to William must have been annulled.]
