HUSBAND:
[F122]. Samuel FERRIN. [PC W2].
Born 12 NOV 1804 at Hebron, Grafton County, New Hampshire; son of Ebenezer FERRIN [F244] and Lydia PHELPS [F245]. He lived with his family in Hebron until about 1809 or 1810, when the family moved to Orange, New York. The family then sold their land in New York and moved back to Hebron by 1812.
They then sold their land again in Hebron in 1815, and started in the fall by oxcart for New York. They first settled in Sardinia, near Concord (which is now Springville), Erie County, New York. They appear on the 1830 Federal Census in Sardinia. Western New York at the time was called The Burned Over District. {S10}.
Sometime before the 1840 Census they had moved a little further westward to Concord, Erie County, New York, which is located near the village of Springfield. They were among the first settlers at Concord.
He married (1) Olive Phidelia (Fidelia) COON on 1 MAR 1825 at Concord, Erie County, New York. She died 9 JUN 1830 at Olean, Cattaraugus County, New York.

In 1838 he and his wife and family moved to Lundy's Lane, Erie County, Pennsylvania. He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 15 FEB 1841. He moved from Pennsylvania to Springfield, Illinois, where he remained until 1846, when he moved further west to Lee County, Iowa. On 5 DEC 1848 they moved to Indiantown, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. From there they started west and arrived in Salt Lake City on 4 OCT 1852.
They left Iowa on 18 July 1852 for Salt Lake in the Allen Weeks Company. The family party included Samuel Ferrin, Sally Clotilda Powell Ferrin, their son James Ferrin, and Sally's son by her previous marriage, George Josiah Marsh. George recorded in his diary: "in July the 13th 185[2] day wee left Indian town and made our way to Salt Lake City[.] wee had some little trouble with a man by the name of Bradshaw befor leaving[.] after crossing the Mosourie [Missouri] River the colory [cholera] was quite sevear [severe.] wee lost 15 out of a company of 50 wagons but thank god wee were all presurved[.] wee traveled in the large Company some 200 miles then the ten wagons that father [Samuel Ferrin] was captain over left the rest and went on[.] wee arrived in Salt Lake City the first of Oct all in good health[.]" (S7).
He married (3) Margaret Ann HOWARD, widow of Robert McBRIDE, on 3 MAY 1857 in Ogden, Weber County, Utah. Margaret Ann Howard was the widow of Robert McBride, who died in Rock Creek Hollow in 1856 with other members of the Martin Handcart Company. Margaret, and their children Jeanetta (Mrs Jacob Samuel Ferrin), Heber, Ether, Peter, and Margaret survived the emigration ordeal. Samuel Ferrin took them in not long after their arrival in Salt Lake City in November 1856, and then he married Margaret in 1857.
He married (4) Ann CHAPMAN, widow of Charles PLANT, on 18 MAR 1860 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. Ann Chapman was actually divorce from Charles Plant. He remained in England and died there years later. Even though they were divorced, Ann apparently retained the name of Plant. She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and made her way to Utah, where she met and married Samuel Ferrin. She was born in 1811.
He married (5) Anna PLANT on 24 AUG 1861 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. Anna Plant is the daughter of Ann CHAPMAN and Charles PLANT. Anna Plant was born in 1842.

She married (1) PALMER. The infant child Alice Ferrin was residing with Julia Fidelia Ferrin, who was still using her maiden name, for which there is no explanation except that perhaps she and Mr Palmer were never properly married. She married (2) Hyrum Norton BYINGTON.

WIFE (2):
[F123]. Sally Clotilda POWELL. [PC W2].
She is named Sally Powell in family records and in the Endowment House sealing records. In her own endowment record she is called Sally Ann Powell. In records of her son George she is called Sally Clotilda Powell.
She was born on 29 March 1811 in Rome, Oneida County, New York; daughter of James POWELL [F246] and Clotilda Madison SALISBURY [F247].
On the 4th of July in 1817, the Erie Canal was begun in Rome, New York. Rome was the center of this activity because it was the historic portage point between the Mohawk River and Wood Creek. The Erie canal was to eliminate the 1.7 mile portage over land, and greatly facilitate water passage to Lake Ontario. Though Sally would have been too young to fully appreciate the importance of this event, it would have had great significance in the lives of her family and neighbors.
f

HUSBAND (1) of Sally Clotilda POWELL.[F123]:
Josiah MARSH.
Born on 1 July 1800 in St. Alban's, Franklin County, Vermont; son of Lemeul MARSH and Rosanna WARNER. {S6, S8}.
His father, Lemuel Marsh, had been a farmer there since 1792, and his mother, Rosanna Warner, had fourteen to fifteen children. Lemuel was born in Clarendon, Rutland, Vermont, to Amos Marsh and Abigail Dimmock, and Rosanna was also born in Clarendon to David Warner and Rebeckah Smith. The Marsh and Warner farms were situated quite closely together, and it seems that when David Warner sold out in 1792, moving to St. Albans, that Lemuel Marsh followed his school sweetheart to where they made their home. David Warner’s will names his daughter as Rosanna Marsh, and Lemuel Marsh was an executor of that will. {S6}.
The Lemuel Marsh family is on record in the deeds, taxes, and town affairs of St. Albans until 1817. Lemuel leaving Vermont so quickly was later understood by the fact that there was a terrible freeze there in 1816 that destroyed the crops, named “the year without a summer.” By the spring of 1817, prices were so high on everything that people could not even buy seed for their land. People left Vermont in droves, and Lemuel and his family went with them. That explains the "surveryor of highways" one month and selling his land the next. At that time, or soon afterwards, they moved to Bergen, Genessee, New York, where he is found in the 1820 census. {S6, S4, S9}.
By about 1825, the Lemuel Marsh family had moved to Randolph, Cattaraugus, New York. The land office there burned, so the early deed records were lost. {S6}.
He married Sally Clotilda Powell in 1826 in Randolph, Cattaraugus County, New York. {S6, S8}.
The 1830 and 1840 census records of Conewango and Randolph show the Marsh family on the same farm, but they are listed in different places as they were on the border between two towns. {S6}. Josiah Marsh was found in the 1830 census of Conewango, New York, living next to his father, Lemuel. {S4}.
Josiah Marsh, belonged to the Bible Christian religion. Their first child was a girl, the only child they had except myself. My mother believed and worshiped with the Methodist persuasion. Differing in their religious views did not affect their happiness. They believed that if they were good, moral people, they would be saved as well in one church as another. {S4}.
He died in 1831 of blood poisoning. Their son George wrote, "My father, about the time of my birth, met with an accident which caused his death. In cutting the lock of a hoop with a very sharp pointed knife, he let it slip into his leg just above the knee. He was laid up with it for some time; but being a man of great ambitions, he went to work before it was sound, which proved fatal to him and ended in his death. He died in 1831 (29 March) leaving my mother with my sister, Jane, and myself." George Josiah also tells of his mother's later marriage to Samuel Ferrin, the loss of the family farm, and of their history as early pioneers to Utah. {S4}.

- Jane Clotilda MARSH. Born 7 January 1827 in Cattaraugus County, New York. She married Elihu Ulysses PETTINGILL on 26 October 1849 at Council Bluffs, Iowa. She died on 6 June 1904 in Willard, Box Elder, Utah, and she and Elihu were buried in the Willard Cemetery.

He married (2) Jane Rosetta ANDREWS on 19 February 1854 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. His own history in his own words: "I was born 15 April 1830. My place of birth was in the State of New York, Cattaraugus County, the town of Randolph. My father, Josiah Marsh, belonged to the Bible Christian religion. He was married to my mother, Sally Powell, in 1826. Their first child was a girl, the only child they had except myself. My mother believed and worshiped with the Methodist persuasion. Differing in their religious views did not affect their happiness. They believed that if they were good, moral people, they would be saved as well in one church as another. My father, about the time of my birth, met with an accident which caused his death. In cutting the lock of a hoop with a very sharp pointed knife, he let it slip into his leg just above the knee. He was laid up with it for some time; but being a man of great ambitions, he went to work before it was sound, which proved fatal to him and ended in his death. He died in 1831 (29 March) leaving my mother with my sister, Jane, and myself."
