SCOTT FAMILY NAME RESEARCH
The object of this research is to investigate the various Scott Families in Virginia and surrounding states, and their descendants, in an attempt to find the origins of our ancestor, John Scott [F137], who is said to have been born in Virginia.
The Virginia Scott family is said to originate with the Reverend John Scott [F1].
Another possibility is John SCOTT [F159] of Clifton, Virginia. He is said to be one of three brothers who came over from England or Scotland. One of those brothers apparently was Thomas SCOTT [F209]. They are said to be descendants of James SCOTT [F210] of Aberdeen, Scotland.
Other than from Scotland, the surname Scot or Scott was well established in East Anglia, England at an early date. There were, for example 35 persons called Scot in the Suffolk subsidy rolls for 1327, and in the Suffolk returns of 1523 there are at least 16 Scots. The surname may indicate Scots descent, or it may be a nickname.

- F159. (CPT) John SCOTT. Born (about 1695)(before 1700). Said to be one of three brothers who came over from England or Scotland. He is thought to have moved from what is now Dinwiddie County (then Prince George) to Spotsylvania County. He is apparently a brother of Thomas TODD [F209] (Source?). He settled in Spottsylvania County by 1727. On 10 SEP 1727 he was witness to a sale of land from COL James Taylor to Joseph Roberts. On 12 MAY 1729 he witnessed the sale of 328 acres of land lying at Little Mountain from William Todd to John Minor. On (2-S10)(22) SEP 1729 CPT John Scott and his officers of the county militia took the oaths as directed by law. In 1729 he purchased a 1000 acre tract of land from Col. William Todd of King and Queen County for 50 cents per acre. The plat reads, “Laid off October the first 1729 for Capt. John Scott of Spottsylvania County, one thousand acres of land at the little mountains in St. George’s Parish in the said county. Being parte of a greater tract of land granted to Coll. Wm Todd, of K. & Queen County.” Though laid off in 1729, this property was not conveyed until March 1730.” The Little Mountain is now known as the Southwest Range, and lies south of the Rapidan River. John built his home on this tract, and called it Clifton. On 1 SEP 1730 another deed is recorded, from James and Jane Sparkes to John Scott, Gentleman, both parties of St. George’s Parish, Spotsylvania County, for 1000 acres on the north side of Rapidan River in the same parish and county.
He married (1) Jane TODD (b.28 DEC 1699-d.28 APR 1731 at Clifton), probably the daughter of Thomas Todd and Elizabeth Bernard, and a sister of William Todd; about 1720. Jane died 28 APR 1731. Her tombstone was located on the farm of Col. Garrett Scott in Orange County. On 2 NOV 1731 he was a witness for a sale of land from Jeremiah Clowder to Patrick Welch. On 6 MAR 1732-1733 John Scott, having been summoned to be a justice refused “by reason that he lived so ill convenient he could not attend.” (Spotsylvania County Records, Order Book, 1730-38, p. 192) In 1734 Orange County was cut from Spottsylvania County. He appears so seldom in the records of Orange County that it is concluded that he left Orange County and returned to Caroline County.
He married (2) Elizabeth, probably about 1736. On 14 MAR 1745 John Terrill of Edgecombe County, North Carolina conveyed a deed in Orange County for “400 acres of land lying on the north side of the Rapidan River in the first fork thereof joining the lands of John Scott and Col John Grimes to John Scott, of St. Margarets Parish, Caroline County,.” On 19 DEC 1752 he conveyed a deed in Orange County to his son Johnny SCOTT for 600 acres being a part of the tract of land “where Johnny Scott now liveth, at the southwest mountains on the brances of Pamunkey River and formerly purchased of Colonel William Todd, joining the lands of Chew and Mrs. Lucy Gordon.” This deed reserves one-half acre for a burial ground. This is apparently the plot where his wife Jane is buried. The 600 acres is undoubtedly the land that contains the estate Clifton. On 17 AUG 1754 the following deed in recorded. “Culpeper County Deed Book-B-1753-1756, pp. 210-213; Deed between John Scott of the Parish of St. Margaret, in the county of Caroline gentleman, of the one part, to Joseph Wood and his wife Elizabeth (Scott) Wood, and John Scott Wood, his Grandson of the other part. Witnessth that the said John Scott for and in consideration of the natural love and affection which he hath and beareth toward the said Joseph Wood, his wife and John Scott Wood, son of Joseph Wood and Elizabeth his wife, of the other part hath given a certain tract of land in the county of Culpeper…conveyed by John Terrell to John Scott, which will more fully appear on the records of Orange county, Virginia,…bounded on the north side of the Rapidan river, corner to Thomas Scott…(signed) John Scott. Witnesses were Johnny Scott, Mary Scott, Thomas Scott, John Crittended, John White, Thomas Thadback, and Alexander Henderson. Proved by the oath of Thomas Scott, Gentleman, 17th of August 1754.” Another deed is recored in Orange County on 23 JAN 1755 to John Scott of Caroline, gentleman, from Thomas White Sr. and Jr., witnesses by Thomas Scott, Joseph Wood, and Johnney Scott.
He died in 1765 at "Clifton", Caroline County, Virginia. His will was presented in court on 14 FEB 1765 in Caroline County, Virginia. The will itself, with most of the early records of Carline County, was destroyed during the Civil War. (S38).

He came from South Carolina to south-central Kentucky, probably between 1793 and 1797. Some evidence indicates that he didn’t arrived until about 1799-1800. [This is probably based on the birth of one of his children. The location given may be inaccurate.] He was head of a household in Barren County, Kentucky between about 1798 and 1810. He resided near what became the town of Gamaliel in the present Monroe County, Kentucky. By 1804 he and his family were located on the waters of Line Creek of the Big Barren River on land adjoining that of the family of William and (Jane?) Proctor. His original Line Creek Land Grant, made in July 1801 is as follows: “Christopher Greenup, Esq. Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, to all whom these presents shall come, Greeting: Know ye, That by virtue and in consideration of a Certificate, number 131, granted by the county court of Barren in July 1801 agreeably to an act of assembly for settling and improving the vacant lands of this Commonwealth there is granted by the said Commonwealth, unto John Scott a certain Tract or Parcel of Land, containing 137 acres by survey bearing date the first day of November one thousand eight hundred and four, lying and being in the County of Barren in Line creek and bounded as followeth towit Beginning on a white Oak in Proctors line thence South thirty West one hundred poles to a red oak thence South eighty poles to an ash on the bank of a creek thence with the meanders of said creek South eighty seven East eighty poles thence South fifty five East twenty poles to the mouth of a hollow cornering on two white Oaks thence North thirty East one hundred and eighty poles to a White Oak thence North eighty West one hundred and fourty poles passing Proctors corner at forty poles and running with his line to the Beginning, With its appurtenances to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of Land, with its appurtances, to the said John Scott and his heirs, forever. In witness, whereof, the said Christopher Greenup, Esq. Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, hath hereunto set his hand, and caused the seal of the said Commonwealth to be affixed at Frankfort, on the 27th day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seven and of the Commonwealth the sixteenth. By the Governor, Christo Greenup. Alfred W. Grayson, Secretary.” Line Creek received its name from the fact that it straddles the Kentucky-Tennessee boundary line for several miles. About late 1810 or in 1811 John and his family moved a few miles south into Smith County, Tennessee. The area was reformed into Mason County in 1842. The established residence on the waters of Salt Lick Creek of the Big Barren River, not far from the point where Little Salt Creek enters into it. John purchased 142 acres of land on Salt Lick Creek from Lenward Morrow of Smith County, Tennessee on 12 DEC 1810 for four hundred dollars. John died there about 1844. F379. Thomas SCOTT. Of Ipswich, Massachusetts. Son of Margaret, who married (2) Ezekiel ROGERS at least by 1661. His mother Margaret’s will was written 28 JUN 1678. Thomas apparently had a large estate, part of which was a vessel. John Kimball gives an affidavit to the court in 1684 that Thomas Scott of Ipswich and John Degrade of New York had dealt a large amount with each other, and that Thomas Scott said he had John Degrade in prison for a debt that he owed him. Thomas died intestate, in 1657, before MAY. His family petitioned the court on 25 SEP 1683 concerning the disposition of his estate, claiming that his widow presented an imperfect inventory to the court, with a subsequent inventory still being imperfect, with excessive debts and an imprecise list of creditors. - F406. John Scott. Born in 1744 in Virginia. He married Mary Prior (Pryor), daughter of John Prior (Pryor). They lived in the Greenbrier Area in the 1700's. Greenbrier County, formerly Montgomery County is now Monroe County in West Virginia.
Mary may have been born about 1748, possibly in Virginia. She eventually married a John Scott (his first name is not proven), and had several children. We think the first was born in Virginia and was probably named Joseph. John and Mary subsequently moved to Kentucky, possibly near Fayette County. One of their sons was named William. William married Rachael Mounts, 2nd child of Thomas and Nancy (Connell/Crawford) Mounts. William and Rachael moved to Switzerland County, IN, perhaps by 1811, and took up land there, receiving a patent on it in 1814. Their second child was Mahala Scott, born in 1813, who married in Switzerland County, on 2 April 1835, John Wilson, also reputedly born in Switzerland County in 1813. They are my great great grandparents. They moved with their first three children in about 1842 to Holt County, MO. In 1851 they emigrated to the Willamette Valley of Oregon, with their 10 children, the tenth being James Thomas Wilson, born in April of 1850.
The story of Mary Prior's Indian captivity is told in the biographical entry of Mrs. Mary (Scott) Stewart, in The Centennial History of Oregon, on page 80. Mary Stewart is the younger sister of Mahala (Scott) Wilson. Mary Stewart, and her husband, Judge John Stewart, moved to Oregon from Holt County, Missouri in 1845, on the infamous Stephen Meek wagon train that got lost in southern Oregon. Their younger brother, Prior Scott, went out to Oregon in 1845 as well. Mahala Wilson's sixth and seventh children were twins; the boy was named Prior Scott Wilson, born 25 April 1845. Since Mary Stewart and Prior Scott went to Oregon in 1845.
Mary's family were said to have been killed in an Indian Massacre and she was captured along with her mother and 6 month old sibling. The baby and mother were killed before they came to the Ohio River. Mary was taken across the Ohio River and marched several days to the Indian's camp. There she escaped while the braves went on another raid. She traveled by night and hid by day. She hid in hollow logs and one time the Indians stood on the log she was in. She was bitten by a snake and after doctoring herself had to lay still for three days. She made it to a fort across the Ohio River which she swam. An officier of the fort adopted her but let her keep her name. She then returned to the Greenbrier area where she married John Scott. He lived in the Greenbrier Area also. (S23).

I am hoping someone else has heard this story and can tell me something about these people. They are my 4th greatgrandparents. Phyllis Bush. (s1).
They moved from Virginia to Kentucky in 1777, to the Bluegrass region of Bourbon County. (S3).
They were in Virginia in 1783.
Later moved to Fayette County, Kentucky. They lived around Lexington, Kentucky in 1785.

- F407. Joseph Scott. Born on 3 September 1773 in Greenbrier, Virginia.; son of John Scott [F406] and Mary Prior. Joseph Scott served in what was called Wayne's War, a series of battles waged against the Indians by General Wayne from 1790 until a peace treaty was signed after the decisive Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794. Joseph applied for bounty land in Linn County in 1850 based on this service. His original petition stated that he served for fourteen months in Todd's brigade of Captain Richard Taylor's company in Colonel William Russell's regiment of Kentucky Volunteers. He further stated that he enlisted on or about September 1, 1793 at Georgetown, Kentucky, and that he was discharged at Cincinnati about December 25, 1794. In August of 1853 he was notified that the records of Captain Taylor were not on file and presumed destroyed, and that he would have to produce "positive testimony of those with whom he served or of credible persons whose knowledge of his service is equally unquestionable."
His brother James Scott of Mercer County, Illinois signed a declaration which said that he could personally swear that Joseph Scott did in the fall of 1793 enlist in the service of the United States in protection of the Northwest Territory under the command of General Anthony Wayne, and in the company of Captain Richard Taylor and was honorably discharged.
In a different handwriting, the following was written on the original notice that Captain Taylor's records had been lost: "2 months service in the War of 1812 is present, on which a warrant for 400 acres will issue if claimant relinquishes his claim for service under Taylor, upon notice to that effect." This paper would later be used when his application for a pension based on service in the War of 1812 was denied because the records showed that he served only 31 days.
During the War of 1812, Joseph Scott served in Captain Thomas Lewis' company of the Ohio Militia as part of Colonel Allen Trimble's regiment of the Ohio Volunteers. He enlisted in Adams County on September 28, 1812, and was honorably discharged on November 15, 1813, at St. Mary, Ohio. In1871, Joseph Scott applied for a government pension based on his military service in the War of 1812. His application was rejected for insufficient service because muster rolls indicated that his actual service lasted only one month, until October 28, 1812. He was in the process of appealing this decision based on the land grant records when he died on November 30, 1871 at the age of 98.
The following notes about Joseph Scott and his wife Mary Cain were received from Brother Xavier Werneth of Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi who is a descendant of their son John Scott:
Joseph Scott and Mary Cain were the parents of thirteen children. Joseph Scott was born September 3, 1773, in Virginia, possibly near Alderson in Greenbrier County, formerly Montgomery County and now Monroe County in West Virginia. His father is thought to be John Scott, and his mother's maiden name is thought to be Prior, a name which keeps reappearing in the Scott family, but so far we have no documentation for this.
In 1775 Judge Richard Henderson's Transylvania Company sent frontiersman Daniel Boone to cut a trail into Kentucky. Shortly after the Revolutionary War, many veterans took their families into this newly opened territory. And in 1777, when Joseph was four years old, his family was among the first to move from Virginia into Kentucky. So Joseph Scott grew up in the Bluegrass region of Bourbon County, Kentucky.
His wife, Mary Cain, was also born in Virginia on March 15, 1777. Like the Scotts, the Cains moved from Virginia to Bourbon County, Kentucky. And it was there that Joseph Scott married Mary Cain on March 28 of 1798. He was 24 and she was 21. Their marriage bond in which Joseph Scott bound himself to pay 50 pounds to the Governor of Kentucky if the marriage was not solemnized is on file in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Accompanying it was a handwritten testimony signed by Mary's parents, James and Mary Cain, on March 28, 1798, stating that: "We do hereby give from unto our hands that we are willing for marriage between Joseph Scott and Mary our daughter as witness our hands and seals." The marriage bound was signed by Mary's cousin Arnold Cain, a blacksmith known as "Iron Cain." He was the son of Edmond Cain whose family was close to that of William Custer.
Joseph and Mary Scott's first child, Prior, was born November 4, 1798, in Bourbon County, Kentucky, on a triangular piece of land on Silas Creek bordered by Scott and Harrison Counties. From Bourbon County, Kentucky, the Scotts moved to Ohio in 1799 and lived there for 20 years in Adams County and then in Scioto County.
Accompanied by several families of Cains, Scotts, Jones and Humbles, Joseph and Mary moved with their son Prior from Kentucky into the newly opened Virginia Military District of Ohio. There were many tracts of land that had been granted to veterans who had failed to make the necessary improvements for ownership. These forfeited lands were therefore on the market for a cheap price. The above mentioned pioneer families were among the very first settlers in Adams County, Ohio, in what was then known as Meigs Township, and today as Cain-Jones Hollow. Joseph and Mary Scott settled with the Cains in an area known as Brush Creek near West Union in Adams County.
Most of Joseph and Mary Scott's thirteen children were born in Ohio. After Rachel's birth in 1823, the Scott family joined the westward movement from Ohio to Indiana and settled in Montgomery County near Crawfordsville in March. Several of their older children were married while they lived in Montgomery County. Crawfordsville is situated on the south bank of Sugar Creek, 20 miles south of Lafayette and 50 miles northwest of Indianapolis. According to John Scott, author of The Indiana Gazetteer published in 1826, Crawfordsville was the seat of justice in Montgomery County, Indiana, and had a population of 200 inhabitants with 3 stores, 3 taverns, 1 grocery, and 1 doctor. The situation was described as a delightful one, possessing many advantages, among which was a large spring, affording sufficient water to supply the whole town and a large grist mill.
The federal census of 1830 for Montgomery County, Indiana, page 15, shows Joseph and Mary Scott's household consisting of 12 people. Living with them were 9 of their 12 children, and 1 male between 90-100 years old. Their son Jesse and his family lived nearby.
The Scotts stayed in Indiana about fourteen years. Then in April of 1836, the Scott clan moved from Indiana, to Mercer County, Illinois. In November of 1836, Joseph Scott bought two tracts of land consisting of 160 acres each in Township 13 for $1,000. That was quite a considerable sum of money in those days. Later the same month, he bought another 380 acres for $450.
The federal census of 1840 for Mercer County, Illinois, Township 13, page 318, shows Joseph and Mary Scott living alone except for only one of their daughters who was between 15 and 20 years old. Living on nearby farms were several of their children and their families: Notley Scott, Jesse Scott, James Scott, and Mary Scott Mann. In 1840 and 1843 Joseph and Mary bought more land in Township 13, some of it from their son Notley.
In 1839 several of their sons (John, Joseph, and Prior) had moved from Illinois to Iowa, as some of that territory's first settlers. They established Scott's Mills in 1844 where the Marion and Mount Vernon Roads cross at Big Creek in Linn County. It became the most important mill in the area. Joseph and Mary Scott's sons became large land owners and important pioneers in the development of Linn County, Iowa.
In 1845 Joseph and Mary began selling some of their land in Mercer County, and in September of 1846 they sold 110 acres for $1,300 to their son Jesse. It was probably at that time that they moved from Illinois to Linn County, Iowa, where several of their children had settled and done very well for themselves.
Thus by the time of the 1850 federal census, Joseph and Mary Scott were living in Linn County in their own house but on the same farm with their daughter, Delilah, who was then 36, and her husband Joseph Caraway, and their seven children. The census shows Joseph Scott, family #242, age 78 as a farmer whose property was valued at $3,000--half the total value of the farm. Mary Scott's age is listed as 73. The census shows that both were born in Virginia.
When they moved to Iowa, Joseph and Mary retained possession of a good part of their land in Illinois, which may indicate that they probably intended to return there. But in 1850 they sold part of it to their son James, and in 1854 they sold the remaining portion to their son Notley.
Joseph and Mary Scott were still in Linn County when their son John died in 1855. Not long afterwards, however, Joseph and Mary Scott did decide to return to Mercer County, Illinois. In 1854 Township 13 where they had once owned hundreds of acres became known as Liberty and then the following year it waw named North Henderson. Joseph's son Notley Scott was the town's first supervisor. North Henderson on the north fork of the Henderson River contained the best agricultural and timber land in the county. One of the groves in the area has been named Scott's Grove after members of Joseph and Mary Scott's family who owned 485 acres of land there.
Joseph and Mary Scott settled once more in North Henderson Township. And it was there that Mary Scott died March 2, 1857, two weeks before her 86th birthday. She was buried at Mann Cemetery in nearby Alexis.
The federal census for 1860 shows Joseph Scott still living in North Henderson in the home of his son, Jesse Scott, with his daughter-in-law and five of their nine children. Joseph is listed as 87 years old. Living nearby is his son Notley Scott and his family of 12 children. Notley was one of the best known pioneers in Mercer County, and the first supervisor of North Henderson. He owned over 465 acres of land there called Scott's Grove.
In May of 1862 Joseph Scott bought an 80 acre farm for $270 from his daughter Mary and her husband Young C Mann. He sold this farm to Young's brother Joseph Mann in 1865 for $500, and he bought a better 80-acre farm from his son in 1867 for which he paid $2,500. Evidently Joseph who was up in years was no longer able to manage by himself. By the time of the 1870 federal census, Joseph, age 97, was still living in North Henderson but in the home of his daughter Mary and her husband Young C Mann and their children.
By 1871 North Henderson was still the only village in the Township and it was located on the Rockford, Rock Island, St. Louis Railroad line. The village consisted of two general business stores, two drug stores, two hardware stores, two farm supply stores, two grain merchants, and one lumber yard as well as one restaurant, hotel, barber shop, shoe shop, furniture store and so on. It also had a Methodist Episcopal Church and school. Joseph Scott, one of its first settlers, must have been quite proud of its progress.
Joseph lived to be almost 100 years old. He died November 30, 1871, at the age of 98. He left no Will or testament. His personal wealth was about $4,000, but he also held real estate which was the subject of several probate court battles in Linn County, Iowa, and Mercer County, Illinois, among his many heirs. Joseph Scott is buried next to his wife in Mann Cemetery at Alexis, three miles from North Henderson, Illinois.

John Scott. Born in 1665 in New Kent County, Virginia.
- [F476]. John Scott. Born (1665)(about 1675) in New Kent County, Virginia; son of John Scott [F475] and Mary Bassett. He died on 23 OCT 1729 in St. Peters Parish, New Kent, Virginia. Elected in 1714 Commissioner of Peace, New Kent Co., Va. Elected in 1716 Sheriff of New Kent Co. Event: Military Colonel. His estate was name Scottsvlle. He married Judith Dudley. The St. Peter's Parish Register shows the baptisms of the first six children. Most presume that John Scott was of Scottish descent. When his son John made a will in 1730, he mentioned goods, moneys, claims, and demands in Virginia and England. We do not know if Col. Scott was born in the Colony. The name John Scott appeared as a headright on four large New Kent County land patents: Maj. William Wyatt for 1,900 acres & #160; during October 1670, Col. Augustine Warner for 10,100 acres in Rappahannock and New Kent Counties & # 160; in 1672, Lawrence Bathurst for 5,000 acres & # 160; in Apri l 1691, and Moses Davis and John Ree for 2,100 acres in St. Peter's Parish in September 1683. Some believe John Scott was the son of a Daniel Scott who was born in 1615 but we have no evidence. John Scott paid quit rents on 300 acres in New Kent in 1704 yet we do not know how he came to own the land. & # 160; His place was & quot; Scottsville.& quot ; Scott served in various significant roles in New Kent County. He was named in the Commission of Peace (1714), was sheriff (1716 ), coroner, justice of the peace, and for more than twenty-five years served as a vestryman of St. Peters Parish. John Scott of New Kent County bought 100 acres on Tuckahoe Creek in Henrico (now Goochland) County from Thomas Mims on 30 August 1717 & # 160; and sold it to Philip Webber of King William County 4 April 1727. & # 160; Judith relinquished her dower right. John Scott died 23 October 1729 according to the St. Peters Parish Register. Judith survived her husband as was still living in 1734.(source: TERRY MENDENHALL on Ancestry.com).
