- F6. Nathan Salisbury. Born on 1 DEC 1751 in Charlestown, MA or Warwick, Rhode Island; son of Martin P. Salisbury [F5] and Mary Pierce. He married Abigail Stone (b: 19 OCT 1753 in Cranston, RI, only daughter of Deacon Joseph Stone, of Cranston) on 16 May 1771. No record of a Salisbury is found in the 1770 List of Providence Taxpayers. Nathan Salisbury removed from Warwick to Cranston, RI, and resided there until 1795 when he removed to Providence. Leonard Bucklin of the Bucklin Society claims he was actually from Bristol at the time of the attack on the Gaspee. Nathan Salisbury served as a private in Capt. Peter Burlingame's Co., Colonel John Matthewson's Reg. R.I. Miltia. (NSDAR 136111, Mrs. Roberta Horn Little). Later served as Corp. in Capt. Benjamin West's Co. Colonel John Lanham's Reg. Per the Providence Phoenix; 22 June1802; At a town meeting of Providence, Nathan Salisbury along with 9 others were appointed Field Drivers. A field driver was the person responsible for gathering up unattended and wandering livestock from the town common or other premises. In March 1803 he moved from Providence to Harford, Cortland County, NY where he purchased a farm and remained until 1806. He then went to Cazenovia, Madison, NY, where he remained only through the winter. In Mar 1807 he went to Homer, then in Onondaga County, NY and located at Cold Brook. He died on 4 MAY 1817 in Scott, Cortland, NY. Unfortunately, he did not live long enough to have applied for a pension based on his Revolutionary War service. In Section 7 of the Homer, NY cemetery is one Nathan Salisbury, b.1 Dec 1751, d. 4 May 1817. Gravestone reads: Lt. of company which captured and burned the British schooner "Gaspee" in 1772. His wife is shown as Abigail Stone, b. 16 Oct 1753, d. 15, Dec 1836. Unfortunately, as of now, Nathan Salisbury's claim to have been part of the group that burned the Gaspee in 1772 is unsubstantiated by any other source than his own epitaph. Grandfather Salisbury returned to England to claim the family inheritance. The family later learned that his ship sank on the way back to America with the inheritance and Grandfather aboard. It is believed that Welcome's father must have been "Grandfather" Salisbury. He married Polly in New York, probably about 1810. (She was born 1793 in New York, and died Bet. 1850 - 1860 in Richmond Township, Macomb Co., Michigan). He is in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 Census in Genesee County, New York. - [F78]. Adah Salisbury. Born about 1793 in Rhode Island; daughter of Richard Salisbury [F76] and Elizabeth Eaton. The record of her birth has not been found. She may have been born in Connecticut . She married Hezekiah Smith, son of Asa Smith and Anne, on 5 AUG 1810 in Glocester, Providence County, Rhode Island. Hezekiah was born 24 OCT 1787 in Glocester, and died after 1842. Asa was a large land owner in the town of Glocester, RI. In 1814, Asa deeded his entire estate of 123 acres to Hezekiah, "in consideration of love and good will". It is probable that Adah and Hezekiah were living with his parents for some time, although their daughter Adah Eliza said she was born in Cumberland in 1829, Adah and Hezekiah do not appear on any RI Census until 1830, when they were with Hezekiah's mother Anne, the widow of Asa Smith. She deeded her dower rights to Hezekiah. Adah was the mother of eleven children. Several of her children died at an early age. By the year 1850, Adah was a widow living in Cumberland with her only surviving child, Elizabeth who was single, age 21. Also in their home was Charles William Cole, only son of her daughter Eliza, wife of Joseph Cole. Eliza died between the years 1845 - 1847. She may have died in childbirth. Charles was born in September of 1845 in Cumberland. On the 1850 Census, Adah was 56 and Chareles was five years old. He lived with her until her death in 1852.
