GOODSPEED FAMILY STUDY
The purpose of this study is to identify a Mr. GOODSPEED who married Mary BASSETT. The journal of Jacob Hamblin speaks of Mary Bassett, in which he said "Granfather hamblin maried mary Basset. This basset married a goodspeed, decendent of the Goodspeeds that came over in the ship Mayflower." This Mr. GOODSPEED [see F122] would have been born about 1743 and died sometime between about 1763 and 1769. Mary BASSETT then married (2) Barnabas HAMBLIN [F232] on 23 NOV 1769 in Falmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. This doesn't give much information about Mr. GOODSPEED, but this is what we have for search parameters. As far as I know, Mr. GOODSPEED and Mary BASSETT had no children. The reason that we care so much about finding Mr. GOODSPEED is that it will possibly clarify the true identity and parents of Mary BASSETT.

ORIGINS
The GOODSPEED family, as far as this study has shown so far, all came from Wingrave.
Wingrave is a compact hill village set on the edge of the Aylesbury valley in Buckinghamshire, England. Wingrave's homepage is found at: WINGRAVE. Wingrave is located about four miles north east of Aylesbury, three miles south west of Wing.
The name Wingrave is said to be based on the name of a local Saxon land owner in pre-Conquest England named Withun. In the Domesday Book the name appears as Withungrave, which is interpreted from Anglo-Saxon as Wiwinga graf or Weoinga gras, meaning Withun's Grove, where perhaps Withun owned woodland for timber, fuel, grazing or hunting. In 1163 it is called Wiungraua. This name is also reflected in the nearby village of Wing, Buckinghamshire.
Wingrave is also located three miles west of the village of Mentmore, where an important ancient manor house was located. The manor at Mentmore, in the hundred of Cotslow and deanery of Muresley, was anciently in the families of Bussel and Zouche. The parish church at Mentmore dates from the 14th century.
The Goodspeed family, who we find living there in the 16th and 17th century, refer to it as Wingrave. Jeffrey's map of 1777 shows that the name was written as Wingrove at that time.

He married Alice LAYTON on 1 December 1641 in Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. In 1643 was on the list of those able to bear arms. His wife was admitted to the church 31 Dec. 1643, and he was admitted to the church 28 July 1644. His father, in his will dated 15 September 1658, bequeathed to him and to his brothers Bennett and Thomas 6£ 13s 4d each, if they or any of them return from beyond the seas within ten years after their fathers decease. Roger was indiscreet enough on one occasion to get himself into rather serious trouble, as shown by the following complaint and proceedings on the records of Plymouth Colony:
"John Jenkins, of Barnstable, [who we are also related to] complained against Roger Goodspeed in an action of defamation to the damage of fifty pound, in his charging of the said complainant to be a lyer, and that he had stolen his kidd, biding all the people there to take notice thereof; this being on a lecter day, in September last, in the publicke meeting house there, before sundry people. The jury find for the plaintiff twenty pounds damage, and the coste of the suite, or an acknowledgement to the satisfaction of the Court, and the coste of the suite."
Roger accepted the alternative as shown by the following entry taken from the same record:
"THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF ROGER GOODSPEED." "These are to certify whom it may concern, That what words passed from mee, Roger Goodspeed, att the meeting house att Barnstable concerning John Jenkins, his stealing my kidd and lying, were rash, unadvised aand inconsiderate words; and upon due consideration I see I had noe cause soe to say, and ame sorry for soe saying, and desire him to passe it by. Roger Goodspeed X his mark." A marginal note in the records states, "This was ended by acknowledgement." It may not be out of place in this connection to say Roger exhibited more courage than discretion. It required considerable "nerve" to openly charge a neighbor with theft and falsehood on a lecture day before all the people. He must have been both corageous and physically strong or Jenkins would then and there have resented the impeachment. He died in 1685 in Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. CHILDREN: Nathaniel GOODSPEED [F43], John GOODSPEED [F9], Mary GOODSPEED [F44], Benjamin GOODSPEED [F45], Ruth GOODSPEED [F46], Ebenezer GOODSPEED [F5], Elizabeth GOODSPEED [F37]. {S2a, S2e, S2f, S4, S15}.

- [F122]. Mr. GOODSPEED. The journal of Jacob Hamblin speaks of Mary Bassett, in which he said "Granfather hamblin maried mary Basset. This basset married a goodspeed, decendent of the Goodspeeds that came over in the ship Mayflower." Therefore, Mary Bassett married (1) Mr. GOODSPEED. She married (2) Barnabas HAMBLIN [F232] on 23 NOV 1769 in Falmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. Barnabas Hamblin was was christened on 26 APR 1747in Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts; which would make him 22 years old at the time. Mary Basset is usually said to be the daughter of Jonathan BASSETT and Mary FREEMAN; however the daughter of Jonathan and Mary died 2 AUG 1772 and was buried at the Sandwich Old Burying Ground, Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. This death date would preclude the daughter of Jonathan and Mary from being the Mary Bassett who married Barnabas HAMBLIN. There is also much confusion about the birth date of Mary Bassett. One possible birthdate given is a Mary Basset born on 26 AUG 1753 in Sandwich. This birth date in 1753 appears to be too early for the marriage in 1769, so I presume this is the child of Jonathan and Mary who died in 1772. Another birthdate for a Mary Basset is given as 20 MAR 1745, also in Sandwich. This would make her 24 years old at the time of the marriage to Barnabas, and would allow time for her to have married previously, so I presume this to be the correct birthdate. So if we assume that Mary was probably about 18 years old at the time of her marriage to Mr. GOOODSPEED, and he possibly 20 years old, he would have been born possibly about 1743, and they would have been married about 1763. He would have died, we presume, sometime between 1763 and 1769. This doesn't give much information about him, but this is what we have for search parameters. As far as I know, they had no children. Barnabas and Mary moved to Vermont in the mid-1790's. Mary died on Grand Isle, Grand Isle County, Vermont.

Our next inquiry comes from Lee Finton and it is as follows:
In the Cone family genealogy, Walter Fenton of Vermont married a (?) Cone. You have 4 children listed [in the Robert Fenton genealogy on the web site] but I have notes from other genealogists indicating there was a Walter Jr.
He is researching his Great Grandfather Roswell John Finton, born Vermont in 1815. He moved to New York at an early age and married Sally Ann Meacham, the daughter of Lyman Meacham and Mercy Goodspeed. Any suggestions or inputs would be greatly appreciated.
You have Walter listed under the Robert Fenton Genealogy [in the Robert Fenton genealogy on the website]. Some other genealogists he has contacted want to associate Walter to James Fenton, of the “Thomas Ashley Atkins, Fenton Family of America”, as being the lost son of Joseph Fenton who was killed in the Revolutionary War. Joseph Fenton married Sarah Steel and was to have had three children (?), one of whom was Anna Fenton that married Ethiel Cushman. He suspects some of the rational being that a large part of the family moved to the Rutland, Vermont area, i.e. the other three brothers.
Any information you may have on this would be greatly appreciated and can be sent to the following address:

John and Desire had at least the following six children.
*
Mary Freese was born October 10, 1773. She died November 13, 1804 at age 31 in Lee, Massachusetts.
*
Rebecca Freese was born April 18, 1776. There is a record of a Rebecca Freeze marrying a John Van Deusan on April 18, 1802 in Great Barrington, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Whether this is the same Rebecca I do not know. Regardless, Rebecca married Anthony Goodspeed in 1808. Anthony was born August 20, 1769 in Sandwich, Massachusetts to David Goodspeed and Naomi Lewis.
Rebecca and Anthony had six children, probably all born in Lee, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.
*
Martin Lewis Goodspeed was born October 23, 1810.

Rebecca Goodspeed was born January 29, 1812.
*
Cynthia Goodspeed was born April 30, 1813.
*
Albert Goodspeed was born September 16, 1814.

Oct. 29, 1835, to Sophronia Goodspeed, a native of Massachusetts,
