ETHELWULF, King of the West Saxons

HUSBAND:
ETHELWULF. (Aethelwulf). King of the West Saxons. [CHART A1].
Born (about 800-S4)(about 807), son of EGBERT, King of Wessex [F996970908168] and Redburg [F996970908169]. In 825 Beornwulf of Mercia led an army into Wessex. It was defeated at Ellendun (Wroughton) in Wiltshire. Egbert, Ethelwulf's father, followed up this victory by offering his leadership to the other kingdoms of southern England who had suffered Mercian domination for more than a century. A detachment of his army under his son Ethelwulf and Bishop Eahlstan of Sherborne entered Kent and drove out the Mercian puppet Bealdred. The people of Kent, Surrey, Sussex, and Essex submitted to Egbert immediately, and the king of the East Angles appealed to him for peace and protection.

He married Osburh [498485454085] about 830 A.D.

In 839 his father died, and he acceded to the throne of Wessex on 4 FEB 839 A.D. at Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey. Ethelwulf did not press for advantage against the Mercians. In 853, their king Burgred asked for and obtained the assistance of Wessex in a campaign against the Welsch. In fact in 855, his daughter, Aeltelswitha, married Burgred, king of Mercia. He divorced Osburgh in 853 A.D. He married Judith [F249242727041] on 1 OCT 856 A.D. at Verberie sur Oise, France. He died on 13 JAN 858, and was buried at Winchester.
