INDEX OF FAMILIES:

GENERATION ONE

F1. (Deacon) Samuel WRIGHT.
It is not known exactly who are the parents of Deacon Samuel Wright. It is thought that he is probably the son of John WRIGHT and Martha CASTELL, of Wrightsbridge, Essex, England. It has been proven that his parents are not Nathaniel WRIGHT and Lydia.

If his parents are John WRIGHT and Martha CASTELL, then Samuel was christened (20)(30) JUNE 1606 at the St. Peters parish church of South Weald, Essex, England. He would probably have grown up on the Wright family estate known as Wrightsbridge, located a few miles west of St. Peters church, the parish church for South Weald parish, County Essex, England. South Weald Parish lies about 40 miles east of London. However, there is no direct proof as yet that the Deacon Samuel Wright of Spingfield, Massachusetts is the son of John and Martha.

It is said that Samuel was born 17 DEC 1591 in London, Middlesex, England [S15]. Samuel probably attended Emmanuel College in 1624, though proof must yet be found that this is the correct Samuel.

He married Margaret (STRATTON?)(about 1625-1626 in England)(before 1627-S15) (in 1631 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts) .

He was a Puritan from England, who came to America sometime between 1630 and 1636, probably 1636. He probably lived for a short time in the Bay Area surrounding Boston immediately after arriving.

He was one of the first settlers of Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, and came to that place about 1636 in the company of William Pynchon, and others, from the Bay area in Eastern Massachusetts. Springfield was originally called by its Indian name "Agawam," and was known as such until 1640.

Samuel settled on what is now Main Street, a little below where now stands the historic First Church.

He is mentioned in the Springfield town records in 1639 as having been called upon to serve as Deacon to the flock of the first Congregational Church, "…exhorting the people until such time as another could be got for the job…" How long he served at this time is unknown, but eventually an ordained minister was found.

He served jury duty on 14 November 1639 at Agawam (Springfield), Hampden County, Massachusetts. The jury heard cases between John Woodcoke & John Cable and between William Pynchon & Thomas Merricke. This was the first jury noted in the court records. The other jurists were Henry Smyth, Jehew Burr, Henry Gregory, John Searle and Samuell Hubbard.

He served jury duty on 18 June 1640 at Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. This jury heard a case between William Warriner & Henry Gregory.

He served jury duty on 10 September 1640 at Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. This jury heard a case between Henry Gregory & John Woodcoke in action of the case for 'fower poundes fowerteene shillings.'

He took the Oath of Freeman on 14 April 1648 n Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.

He was ordered to pay a fine on 30 May 1649 at Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, along with John Herman, for the damage their team of oxen did to Henry Burt's field. They were ordered to pay 1½ bushels of marsh wheat.

After the resignation of the 1st minister, and his return to England in 1652, Deacon Wright, Deacon Chapin, Mr. Holyoke and Henry Burt all conducted religious services on the Sabbath.

From a page torn out of his account book, dated 25 Jul 1653 at Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts: [torn]n accot of what I haue laid out [torn] Mill dam 25 July 1653 for Sam Wright 3 d 00 05 00, To Sam Wright for 3 d worke besides above 00 05 00."

He was fined on 1 November 1653 at Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts: "The persons underwritten being presented for breach of the Towne orders are ordered to pay: as followeth : - Samuell Wright 0.02.00.

He and a group of fifteen other families formed what is now called the Northampton Society in 1654, and moved together to a land grant about 35 miles up the Connecticut River (it was then called the Big River) and founded the town of Northampton in 1656, where his son Samuel Jr. had preceded him. Among the first groups to settle at Northampton, there were a total of about thirty families who are considered the first settlers of Northampton. Samuel Jr. was one of the town selectmen that year, in 1656. The first settlers purchased the land there from the Indians. At first, the settlement of Northampton was called Squakeag, the Indian name for the area. It was next called “Northfield” by the English settlers because it was the northernmost settlement on the river. Finally the name Northampton was settled upon.

At Northampton, he and his son Samuel were granted a home lot of 4 1/2 acres on Main Street, between King and Market Streets. He is spoken of as one of the leaders of the town, prominent in local affairs, serving on various committees. They built small huts near each other, and ran a stockade around a number of them for a fort into which they might flee, if attacked.

He provided bond on 24 March 1655 at Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts of £4 for the preformance of the order concerning his son Samuel Wright Jr. providing for the illegitimate child he fathered on Mary Burt.

At a meeting of the town on 24 Mar 1656, Deacon Wright alone was chosen to dispense the word of God on the Sabbath at 50 shillings per month.

In a lawsuit dated 29 March 1659 at Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts he brought a suit, along with Edward Elmer, Alexander Edwards & John Stebbin, against the town of Northampton "in an action of the case concerninge their turninge out some of the freemen from beine select men to which office they were chosen."

From John Pynchon's account books in June of 1660, he employed "Deacon Wright CR June [1660] By your halfe, for Sawing of the Timber for the Corection house 03 15 00."

His name was the first one signed to the church covenant in Northampton, adopted in 1661.

His will was written on 10 NOV 1663.

He died "while sleeping in his chair" on 17 October 1665 at Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.

His will was probated on 27 Mar 1667.

WIFE of (Deacon) Samuel WRIGHT [F1]:
Margaret (STRATTON?).
Born about 1610 in England. She married Samuel WRIGHT [F2248] about 1625-1626 in England. She died 24 JUL 1681 at Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.

CHILDREN of Deacon Samuel WRIGHT [F1] and Margaret STRATTON:

Hannah Wright and Benjamin Wright are often said to be a children of Deacon Samuel Wright and his wife Margaret. As far as we know, Deacon Samuel Wright did not have children Benjamin or Hannah, as has been claimed. Hannah and Benjamin will be tracked here in an attempt to shed further light on their parentage.
[F11]. Hannah Wright
  • [F12]. Benjamin Wright.

    GENERATION TWO

F2. (Sergeant) Samuel WRIGHT Jr. Born (about 1627-1632)(probably 3 OCT 1632)(1633-S2)(4 DEC 1638) in England; son of (Deacon) Samuel WRIGHT [F1] and Margaret STRATTON. It has been reported that he was christened at Kelvedon Hatch on 10 March 1632. This record is not found in the St. Nicholas parish register, which is not surprising, since the Kelvendon Hatch branch of the family were Catholic, whereas Samuel WRIGHT was of the puritans. It is said that he came to America with his father. It is not known exactly when his father came to New England, but probably about 1635-1636.

It is said that he came to America with his father. It is not known exactly when his father came to New England. If it was in 1630, as some have said, then Samuel was born in New England. If it was in 1636, as others have said, then Samuel was born in England.

He moved with his father to Springfield, Massachusetts about 1636.

He married Elizabeth Burt on 24 NOV 1653. It is said that this occurred at Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. However Samuel did not go to Northampton until 1655 or 1656; so he must have married Elizabeth in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.

They were among the first to move to Northampton, in 1655 or 1656. After moving to Northampton, he settled on Bridge Street where the house of John L. Draper stood. In addition to the 3 acres for a homelot, he was granted 34 acres of meadow land. After living on this homestead about 17 years, and serving the town as one of its selectmen and in other offices, he went with his family, in company with 15 other families, as pioneer settlers, to a place about 35 miles up the Connecticut River, called by the Indians from whom it was purchased, Squakeag. This place was named by the English "Northfield" because it was the northermost settlement on the river, became the future home of Samuel Wright Jr. and many of his descendants. Samuel Wright Jr must have lived within the meadow fence & not on the plains. Here they built small huts near each other, and ran a stockade around a number of them for a fort into which they might flee, if attacked.

Samuel Wright Jr. had an illegitimate child with Elizabeth Burt's sister, Mary Burt. [(Source?) This was probably his brother Judah].

All went peacefully for 2 years until the King Philip war broke out in 1675. In the latter part of August, the safety of Northfield was threatened, and so 20 men were sent up and placed under command of Lt. Samuel Wright. On Thursday 2 September 1675, as Lt. Wright and the men under him were in the field gathering flax, they were attacked by King Philip's men. Lt. Wright was killed, aged ca 45 yrs; also 2 sons of Elder William Janes, their preacher and 5 others, and wounded Samuel Wright III. The rest, men women, and children, fled inside the small stockade, and were shut in there 5 days. What days and nights of terror those must have been to the widow and fatherless children with the savatges burning and destroying outside, and liable to break in at any time and put them all to death. The day after the attack, Capt. Beers, not knowing what had happened set out from Hadley, with 36 mounted men, to bring away the soldiers and inhabitants, but on reaching the outskirts of the town, fell into an ambush, and he and the larger part of his men were killed, but 13 escaped and flec back to Hadley. Immediately Major Treat with more than 100 men prepared to go up for the relief of Northfield, where he arrived Monday afternoon on 6 September. One account is that immediately set about burying those killed on 2 September. The first found was the body of Lt. Wright, which was taken up the bank and buried in the first grave opened in present Northfield Cemetery. His burial was hardly finished when Maj. Treat was struck with a spent ball from the thicket. Upon consulting with his officers, it was decided to take the 100 or more people that had been shut inside the stockade and start back to Hadley that night. In their journey down through the wilderness what fears they must have had; fears of falling into an ambush and meeting the same fate as came to Capt. Beers and Co., on this same route 3 days before, and the fate that came to the 80 young soldiers at Bloody Brook, a few days later.

His inventory was taken March 30, 1676, and amounted to 326£ 14S. House & home lot 60£ had wheel right tools 61/ 3 horses & heofer 15.5, Land in meadow & pasture 163£ sae, grindstone & loom 61/ sheep & swine 10£10s, yoke of oxen & steers 15£, 4 cattle 4 mares & [c]olt 14£, arms & ammunition 65/, bedding & clothing 14£5s. Widow Elizabeth & son Sam'l admin. Widow & heirs made an agreement (for her & those of age) March 30, 1680, She was to have use of 1/2 house 1/2 barn 1/2 homelot which was next to the meadow including all the orchard half the pasture lying next the house containing 13 acres. 1/8 other land & movables. Samuel to have double share. Court to appoint men to divide the estate Men were appointed but not ?. Explanation "half the homelot" may mean that next to Hawley Sheet lot on the side south the land. (Or it may mean lower side of lot below swamp.)

He was also a farmer, carpenter and Selectman, m. Sarah Lyman. When Samuel Wright Jr. rem. to Northfield, it is thought he left Samuel his eldest son in charge of his Northampton home, as he was living there 2 years later when he was drafted to go up under Capt. Lothrop for the protection of Northfield. At the time his father was killed, he was wounded and carried the bullet through life. On 3 May 1703 he sent the following petitions to the general court of MA for aid. "In the first Indian War I was pressed up at Northfield, under Capt. Lothrop and there left a garrison soldier. Soon after which the Indians besieged that fort. They killed my father, and shot a bullet into my right hip. From thence I was brought to Hadley under care of Mr. Westcare, where I was till winter. The Doctor dying, I shifted from one surgeon to another till the spring. In April following I went to Hartford to Mrs. Allens', where I was about 7 months, all which time I paid for my diet and surgery, out of my own estate, and although I attained to so much strength as to walk about and carry up some business, it hath been with much pain and difficulty, for the bullet remaining still in my hip bone, the wound continually runs and hath done so these 15 years; though at times, it is almost dried up, yet it breaks out again and especially of late years it grows worse and worse, so that I am almost disabled for labor, and what I do is with much pain and difficulty. Considering my family has grown so great, I now for the first time petition for relief."

    [F33]. Thaddeus ALVORD.
Born 28 OCT 1781 at Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts; son of Joseph ALVORD, Jr. [F32] and Submit CHAPIN. When he was 10 years old he moved with his parents to Hamilton, Madison County, New York. He married (1) Martha BROMLEY in JAN 1801 at Lockport, New York, and they moved to Lewiston, Niagara County, New York. She died in 1810, leaving six or seven children. The older sister of Thaddeus helped him care for the children afterward.

Thaddeus served as a private in Captain William Watson's Company, First (Harris) Regiment of New York Militia during the war of 1812. He served from 14 JAN 1813 until 28 APR 1814. He was discharged from active duty to get timber for the making of boats which were used by General Winfield Scott in crossing the Niagara River into Canada 3 JUL 1814. The American victory was due to Scott and his tactics more than any other.

He married (2) Sally (Charlotte ?) WELLINGTON in (28 APR 1814)(DEC 1814). Sometime between 1815 and 1824 they moved to Waterford in Oakland County, Michigan. In 1824 his wife Sally died at Waterford. In 1828 Thaddeus visited his brother in New York where he met Sally BRIGGS (BIGGS). They were married in 1834 in New York, she being his 3rd wife. Also that year Thaddeus joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was baptized by Elder Samuel Bent at Sylvan Lake, McCloud County, Michigan. The Prophet Joseph Smith was said to have been present at the time.

Thaddeus sold his property in Michigan in 1835 and immigrated with the Saints to Missouri. In his own hand he wrote, "I removed my family from the state of Michigan to Clay County, Missouri in the year 1835 where I lived in peace with the people of my own land, eighteen months or more, when the people began to be excited in consequences of the emigration of our people to that country. The excitement became so great that I was obliged to sell my place at half price, and removed to the county of Caldwell, where I purchased me a farm, and settled my family, and made good improvement, and was in a good situation to support my family, and there lived in peace with the people until the summer and fall of 1838, when the mob began to rise, and we were obliged to fly to arms in self defense; but notwithstanding our exertion, they murdered and massacred many of our people."

He married (4) Bessie COSETT in 1853.

He moved to North Ogden, Weber County, Utah in 1866. He was ordained a Patriarch.

He died (11)(18)(29) FEB (1871)(1874) in North Ogden, Weber County, Utah; and was buried there in the North Ogden Cemetery.

There was said to be another daughter, Albina or Alsina, born in 1812 also near Lockport, but this would be impossible if Martha died in 1810. She was said to have married Orlando MERMY or MUREY. She died in 1852.

[F34]. Charlotte ALVORD. Born 25 SEP 1815 at Lockport, Niagara County, New York; Child of Thaddeus ALVORD [F33] and Sally WELLINGTON. Between 1815 and 1824 the family moved to Michigan, near Pontiac, in Oakland County. Her mother died when she was 9 years old, in 1824, at Waterford, Oakland County, Michigan. For the next ten years she was raised by her father.

Charlotte was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 14 MAR 1833 at Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan, the same day as her future husband, Lyman CURTIS [F34a]. She was among those called to be a member of Zion's Camp, a relief expedition sent to Missouri to help the saints there. The group from Michigan, under the direction of Hyrum Smith, left there and joined the main body, which had left Kirtland on 5 MAY 1834. They traveled about a thousand miles to reach Missouri. They were released there on 3 JUL 1834. Charlotte married (1) Lyman CURTIS [34a] on (16)(26) JUL 1834 in Clay County, Missouri, probably at Liberty. After they were married they chose to stay with the saints in Clay County, Missouri. In about 1836 they were forced to move from Clay County. They moved to Caldwell County, near where Far West was founded. When the massacre occurred at Far West on 25 OCT 1838, Brigham Young took 10,000 to 12,000 saints into Illinois, many of them to Quincy. Among them were Lyman and Charlotte. On 22 APR 1839 Joseph Smith arrived in Quincy and directed the saints to settle Dr. Halland's land near Commerce, Illinois. It became the central gathering place for the Saints and was renamed "Nauvoo'. Charlotte was given a patriarchal blessing 26 JUN 1845 by Patriarch John Smith. She and her husband, Lyman took their family up the Mississippi River to La Crosse, Wisconsin where they worked to get timber for the Nauvoo temple. She was said to have served with her husband on a mission sometime after 1840. It was probably during this time at La Crosse, though this is not certain. On 7 FEB 1846 she and Lyman received their blessings and endowment in the Nauvoo Temple. At the same time the Saints were forced to begin leaving Nauvoo. About this time Charlotte was pregnant, and either just before the exodus or during it, her son Thomas was stillborn. They stopped with the Saints at Sugar Creek, just nine miles beyond Nauvoo. They stayed there until the first of March, when then again started west. They traveled with the Saints to Winters Quarters.

Lyman was called to travel with the first group of Saints to Utah in 1847. While he was gone, Charlotte and the children stayed with Lyman's brother Moses and his family. Lyman returned to his family in Ohio in the fall of 1847. They spent the next couple of years preparing for the journey west, which they began in the Spring of 1850. They arrived in Salt Lake City in October of that year. Lyman immediately began building an adobe home for the family. When they arrived in the valley, they still had two sacks of buffalo jerky left to sustain the family. The next season they raised a nice bin of wheat, had a good crop of corn, and acquired five pegs. With that and the fish caught in the canyon streams, they felt like they had a fine living.

After a short time, in 1853, Lyman was called on a mission to help settle southern Utah. His family moved to American Fork during his absence. This was probably in 1855 when Johnson's Army approached Utah.

While Lyman was away on his mission, he did not correspond with the family in Salem. Why he did not is not known. There appears to have been frequent visitors between Salt Lake and southern Utah, but he did not avail himself of the opportunity to send word to his family. After not hearing from him for several years, he was presumed dead.

About that time the presiding brethern of the church initiated a policy to care for the large number of widows then found throughout the territory, in which they directed that when a young man marry and the girl's mother was a widow, he would marry the mother as well so that she might receive protection and sustenance. At that time Charlotte's daughter Adaline had chosen to marry Peter Mack ELLIOTT [F34]. As a result of the directive from the brethern, Adaline and Charlotte were both married on the same day, 28 SEP 1856 by President Brigham Young in his office to Peter Mack Elliott [34]. Charlotte had two children by this marriage; Edson William ELLIOTT born 11 MAR 1858, and Harriet Louise ELLIOTT born 8 AUG 1860.

When Lyman's mission ended in 1859, he returned to his family in northern Utah. What their reactions were upon his arrival is not told. As far as I can determine, I do not believe that Lyman and Charlotte lived together after this. Lyman settled in Salem, Utah, but where Charlotte lived, I do not know. Charlotte though, on 26 SEP 1861, had the marriage to Peter Mack ELLIOTT annulled.

Charlotte died 9 SEP 1879 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. She was granted a divorce from Peter Mack Elliott 24 FEB 1931 by President Heber J. Grant, through the request of her children. They also had her resealed to Lyman CURTIS [34A] on 3 JUN 1931.
