Jonathan BURCH

HUSBAND:
[F1060]. Jonathan BURCH (BIRCH-S?)(BURCH-S?)(BURTCH-S?).
Born (about 1639-S3)(about 1645-1652-S?), probably at Dorchester, Suffolk County, Massachusetts; son of Thomas BURCH [F2120]. His death was recorded in a diary [whose?] as 16 NOV 1704 at Stonington, New London County, Connecticut.

CHILDREN of Jonathan BURCH [F1060]:
  1. [F530]. Jonathan BURCH. Born about 1674-1686 at Stonington, New London County, Connecticut. He married 22 AUG 1706 to Mary RATHBUN [F531].
  2. Jeremiah BURTCH. He was born about 1694 in Stonington, New London County, Connecticut. He married Margaret BILLINGS, daughter of Ebenezer BILLINGS and Anne COMSTOCK, on 8 FEB 1716-7 at Stonington, New London County, Connecticut. (S4). They had the birth of 8 children recorded in Stonington. He had several property transactions in Westerly and Stonington. The last of these was in AUG 1742, about the time he left for Beekman, Dutchess County, New York. He settled on a 136 acre farm, number 3, in lot 2 of the Beekman Patent in the Pawling area. This farm had been settled in 1736 by Dennis Kelley with the first rents due in 1742, but by 1748 Jeremiah BURTCH was on the farm. Henry Beekman noted in his rent book; "Will pay rent when I prove the land myn." This farm was in the area of the Patent known as the "Gore" and the title to the land was in constant dispute. The Judgement Rolls at the Hall of Records in New York City (Hall of Records, NYC, roll 134, C-5) include an action against Jeremiah BURTCH for 100 pounds, brought by James Jackson (actually Henry Beekman) in the October term of 1746. Jeremiah BURTCH was charged with trespass on a nine year lease dated 1 JUL 1746 from Beekman. Joseph Murray represented BURTCH. The case was held over until APR 1753 at which time George Soule was retained by BURTCH to show the land to a jury which found BURTCH guilty of trespass and fined him 100 pounds and 6 pence costs. He was also involved in an action brought by Jonathan Brown in OCT 1758. The Edward Livingston Papers contain much detail about the case; ie., 6 MAY 1752 "Then went with Mr. Clinton on the jury a view in the case of BURTCH..." (ELP Box 129:110, H. Beekman papers). From the same source we also have: 7 MAY 1749 "Sister Pawling Cr by the hand of Alida Rutson R.R. Livingston toward las suit v. Burtch 24 pounds, 8 (shillings?)." Also, 13 MAY 1749 "To Jer Burtch cash to Dr. To Sundry letters last winter to __?__ Clinton as also now by Scot, Scot payed him- /15/." (ELP box 129:81). Also, 8 JUL 1749 "Acct delivered me by Mr. Everitt on the Venue between Jeremiah Burtch & self & company." (ELP, box 129:82}. Also, 5 MAR 1753 "Poughquag Company Dr. as acc't & letters to the sherriff for giving possession of Burtch his place 3 pounds, 11 shillings, 3 pence." (ELP box 129:116). Also, "Jeremiah Burtch - 16/8 (Wheat arrears 1 MAY 1751). (ELP box 129). Jeremiah Burtch was taxed in Beekman from 1743 to 1765 when the farm was listed under his son Increase. His tax listings were 5 pounds in both FEB 1743-44 and 1744-45; 6 pounds in FEB 1646-47; 1 pound in FEB 1753; 1 pound in JUN 1758; 2 pounds in 1760; and 4 pounds in JUN 1763. Henry Beekman noted in a letter of 9 JAN 1753 that William Lanphier was in possession of the farm of Jeremiah Burtch (SBP I:761). In 1767 his son Jeremiah was no longer listed as "Jr.", indicating that Jeremiah Sr. probably died shortly before 1767. A Jeremiah Burtch died in 1762 in the F & I War in NY, but was probably too young to be this Jeremiah ( NYMR 529). It was probably his nephew.
