Jonathan BREWSTER

HUSBAND:
[F7630]. Jonathan BREWSTER.
Born on 12 AUG 1593 at Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, England; son of William BREWSTER [F15260] and Mary WENTWORTH [F15261]. He came to New England in the ship Fortune in 1621. He married on 10 APR 1624 to Lucretia OLDHAM [F7631]. About 1630 Jonathan moved his family to Duxbury, Massachusetts. He represented Duxbury as the Deputy to the General Court of the Plymouth Colony in 1639, and from 1641 to 1644. On 18 JUN 1644 Jonathan Brewster records the sale of several books, of which the titles occur in the inventory of his father, William Brewster’s library. They were sold to John Bemon, who “is to paye Jonew: 12s; to sett of for my 2 sones teaching to handle armes.” He moved to New London, Connecticut about 1649, where he was admitted as an inhabitant on 25 FEB 1649-1650. He settled in the part of town later established as Norwich, his farm lying in both towns. Here he was selected as a Deputy to the General Court to the Colony of Connecticut in 1650, and 1655 to 1658. According to a letter dated 1 SEP 1656 to his sister-in-law, Sarah, widow of Love BREWSTER, he and his “whole family resolved for old England” the following year. It is possible that two of his sons, William and Jonathan, did settle in England, but the rest of the family remained in New England. He died on 7 AUG 1659 at New London, Connecticut. He was buried in the old cemetery on Brewster’s Plain, Norwich, Connecticut.

WIFE:
[7631]. Lucretia OLDHAM.
She was of Darby, England. She was undoubtedly a sister of John OLDHAM, who came to Plymouth on his “particular” about 1623, and who was called “brother” by Jonathan BREWSTER. Source 5 says she is the daughter of William Oldham and Phillipa Sowter She married on 10 APR 1624 to Jonathan BREWSTER [7630]. She died on 4 MAR 1678/9.
