William BERKELEY. (William of Stoke Gifford BERKELEY).
Born in 1433, of Stoke Gifford, Gloucester, England; son of Maurice BERKELEY and Ellen MONTFORT.
Of Wyley (Uley) and Stoke Gifford, Gloustershire, England
Sherrif of Worcestershire, 1466 and 1467.
Supported Readeption. Pardoned in 1474.
Member of Parliament from Worcestershire in 1478.
He was summoned to receive knighthood at Edward V’s coronation in 1483.
He received grants, 70, and was knighted at RIII coronation. Add. MS, 6113, f.19b.
Sheriff of Glos. in 1484 and 1485.
His daughter, Katherine married the future Maurice VI, Lord Berkeley in 2 RIII, Smyth, Berkeley MSS II, 210.
Granted lordship of Beverstone in March 1485, lately held by Sir William of Beverstone, and an annuity of 40 pounds.
1485 probably at Bosworth for Richard; attainted. 1486 pardoned. 1495 attainder reversed. 1501 died; heir Richard. Wedgwood.
The 12th of July in the first of Edward the 4th this posthumus Sir Maurice
by the name of Maurice Berkeley of Weoly in the County of Worcester,
knightm, als of Stoke Gifford in the County of Gloucester, knight, hath
another general pardon.
The 26th of November in the 4th year of that kinge dyteth this posthumus Sir Maurice, seized of the often named manors of Kingesweston, Aylberton, Rockhampton, Uleigh, Bradley, Stoke Gifford and Walles, in the County of Glouc.; And of Kinston Seimor in the County of Somerset. And of Rotherwike in the County of South'ton. And of
Brightmerston and Mildeston in Wiltshire. And that Willm is his sonne and
heire twenty and eight years old; after whose death Ellen his wife was
endowed by writ dated the 23rd of February in the said 4th year of Edward
the 4th in the presence of the said William Berkeley, Esq. sonne and heire
of the said posthumus Sir Maurice, in the Counties of Gloucester, Somerset,
Worcester, Hampshire and Wiltshire.
William Berkeley married Anne STAFFORD, daughter of Sir Humphrey STAFFORD [F1853282].
About a year ago I posted a query about the parentage of Anne Stafford, wife
>of Richard Neville. There seemed to be some controversy, as she is generally

By deed dated the 30th of April in the fifth of Edward the fourth seded his
manors of Rockhampton and Uleigh in the County of Glouc. and his manors of
Brightmerston and Mildeston with the Advowson of Mildeston in the County of
Wilts. upon himself and the said Anne his wife and the heires of their
bodyes, with the remainder to the right heires of himself.
The 6th of November in the 9th of Edward the fourth the kinge grants a
general pardon to this Willm by the name of Willm Berkeley of Weoly in the
County of Worcester, als Willm Berkeley of Northfield, als Willm Berkeley
of Vleigh, als Willm Berkeley of Stoke Gifford, als Willm of Bristoll, als
Willm of the City of Worcester, Esquire.
This Sir Willm Berkeley (knighted about the first of Richard the third) was
by parliament in the first of Henry the 7th attaynted of treason by taking
part with that kinge, slaine at Bosworth feild in the third of his raigne;
And his manor of Stoke Gifford and others which by his Attaynder escheated
to the Crowen, were shortly after granted by Henry the 7th to his unkle,
Jasper Earle of Pembroke and the heires maile of his body. Howbeit this
Sir Willm obtained some part of his old possessions by composition in the
4th of Henry the seaventh. And in the 11th of that kinge was restored by
parliament in bloud. And haveing been tampering with the said Earle of
Pembroke for rehaveinge of all his lands, the said Earle dyes without
lawfull issue in the same 11th yeare of Henry ye 7th. And also this Sir
Willm dyes five years after in the 16th of that kinge leaving issue two
sonnes, Richard Berkeley of Stoke Gifford and John Berkeley of Bradley, not
haveinge (as it may seeme) fully reverted himself in all his ancient
inheritance before hee dyed.
He died in (1467-S3)(1501-S1).

Born about 1450, of Gloucester, England; daughter of Humphrey STAFFORD [F1853282]. She married William BERKELEY.
CHILDREN of William BERKELEY [F926640] and Anne STAFFORD [F926641]:
- Richard BERKELEY. Born in 1433, of Stoke Gifford, Gloucester, England. He married Elizabeth CONNINGSBY [F463321]. He died in 1514.
- John BERKELEY. Born about 1472, of Bradley, Gloucester, England. He married Catherine DEVEREAUX.
- Katherine BERKELEY. Born about 1474.
