Richard BERKELEY
HUSBAND:
[F115830]. (Sir) Richard BERKELEY.
Born (about 1508)(1531-S7,S11,S12)(in 1532-S1,S3) in Stoke Gifford, Gloucestershire, England; son of John BERKELEY [F231660] and Isabella DENNYS [F231661].
1st s. Of Weoly, Worcs. Lieut of the Tower of London. MP. Kt c. 1568. Wrote a book A Discourse of the felicity of man or his summum bonum, printed in 1598. Sheriff of Glos; DL of Glos.
He married (1) Elizabeth Ann READE. Elizabeth Ann Reade died apparently sometime between 1552 and 1563. He married (2) Elizabeth JERMY [F115831], apparently about 1565. He died 26 APR (1603-S1,S3)(1605-S7,S11,S12).
WIFE (1):
Elizabeth Ann READE.
Born about 1512, of Milton (Melton), England; daughter of William READE and Catherine ROWDEN (ROWDON).
According to the births of the children, Elizabeth died apparently sometime between 1552 and 1563.
CHILDREN of Richard BERKELEY [F115830] and Elizabeth Ann READE:
- Henry BERKELEY. Born about 1540, of Stoke Gifford,Gloucester,England. He married Mary (Mirryell) THROKMORTON. He died on 7 FEB 1608/1609.
- Elizabeth BERKELEY. Born about 1542 of Stoke Gifford,Gloucester,England.
- William BERKELEY. Birth : Abt 1542 of Stoke Gifford,Gloucester,England
- Elizabeth BERKELEY. Birth : Abt 1544 of Stoke Gifford,Gloucester,England,England. She married Thomas THROCKMORTON, of Tortworth, in 1538, probably at Stoke Gifford,Gloucester,England.
- Catherine (Katherine) BERKELEY. Birth : Abt 1546 of,Stoke Gifford,Gloucester,England. She married (1) Rowland LEE, of Longbarrow, Glos. She married (2) Thomas Babington.
- Mary BERKELEY. Birth : 1548 of,Stoke Gifford,Gloucester,England. She married John HUNGERFORD. She died 8 JUL 1628 Down Ampney,Gloucester,England,England. [This is obviously confusing the children of wife Elizabeth Ann Reade and Elizabeth Jermy, raising doubts as to which is the real mother of Mary].
- Anne BERKELEY. Birth : Abt 1550 of Stoke-Gifford,Glouchester,England. Unmarried.
- Dorothy BERKELEY. Birth : Abt 1552 of Stoke Gifford,Gloucester,England. Unmarried.
WIFE (2):
[F115831]. Elizabeth JERMY.
From the study I have done so far, this is what I believe to be the truth concerning Elizabeth:
She was probably born about 1533 (about 1510-S10)(about 1533-S12)(1542-S3), and probably at Antingham, Norfolk, England. She was definitely Elizabeth, and not Ellenor or Elinor. She was the daughter of Robert JERMY [F231662] of Antingham. The question is, which Robert JERMY? To be born during these dates, she could not be the daughter of Robert JERMY Sr. and Ele BROWNE. She could be the daughter of Robert JERMY Jr., but not by his wife Anne CALTHROPE, since they were not married until 1548. Robert Senior was not said to be of Antingham, but Robert Junior was. This puts Robert Junior in the right place, at the right time, but with the wrong marriage date. If he did not have a wife before Anne, then there must be another Robert.
Elizabeth married Richard BERKELEY [F115830] about 1563 (S3). She is said to have also married Robert RAE (ROE, ROW, ROWE), by whom she had a son, Sir Thomas Roe (or Row) (c. 1581-1644), who became a somewhat famous English diplomat. It is impossible for Elizabeth to be his correct mother, since Sir Thomas was born in 1581, and Elizabeth’s husband, Richard Berkeley lived until about 1603 or 1605. The fact is that the mother of Sir Thomas is said to be Elinor, not Elizabeth. Elinor was the daughter of Robert JERMY of Worstead. Elizabeth was the daughter of Robert JERMY of Antingham. They are two separate Robert’s.
CHILDREN of Richard BERKELEY [F115830] and Elizabeth JERMY [F115831]:
- (Sir) Henry BERKELEY. Born about 1566. of Stoke Gifford. He married Mary Throckmorton (dau of Thomas Throckmorton of Caughton). He died 7 Feb (1606-S1)(1608-S1).
- [F57915]. Mary BERKELEY. Born (about 1564-S3)(about 1568). She was of Stoke-Gifford, Gloucestershire, England. She married John HUNGERFORD [F57914]. She died 8 JUL 1628 at Down-Ampney, Gloucestershire, England.
- William BERKELEY.
